Netflix's ‘Stranger Things’ Finale Made Metallica Sees 650% Increase In Its Song Listeners

10/07/2022

Metallica fans and newbies were flocking to their favorite music streaming destinations to hear more of Master of Puppets song, following its use at the climatic moment in the season finale of Netflix's popular supernatural series Stranger Things.

In the week after the episode was premiered, on-demand streams for the 1986 metal classic were up 650.3%, according to a report from Luminate, which collates data for the Billboard charts.

In the previous week’s first six days before the final episode, Master of Puppets had collected 1,020,333 on-demand audio and video streams.

But following the release of the episode, that number grew to 7,655,536.

The percentage increase was even greater for digital track sales, with a 999% increase during the same time period.

It's worth noting that the massive increase is minimal in the music industry.

In response to the song’s use in Stranger Things, Metallica wrote on Instagram:

"The way The Duffer Brothers have incorporated music into Stranger Things has always been next level, so we were beyond psyched for them to not only include Master of Puppets in the show, but to have such a pivotal scene built around it."

"We were all stoked to see the final result and when we did we were totally blown away... it’s so extremely well done, so much so, that some folks were able to guess the song just by seeing a few seconds of Joseph Quinn’s hands in the trailer!! How crazy cool is that?"

The band also said that it was "an incredible honour to be such a big part of Eddie’s journey and to once again be keeping company with all of the other amazing artists featured in the show."{

And what also helped made the increased popularity, was when the heavy metal band did a TikTok duet with Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) during his heroic scene where he plays the guitar riff to the band’s 1986 song Master of Puppets from their album of the same name.

In the TikTok video, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo perform the song with the caption, “Eddie, this is for you!”

Following the viral trend, Master of Puppets managed to top the iTunes rock charts, 36 years after the song was first released.

The Duffer Brothers who are the creators and executive producers of the hit Netflix science fiction horror drama Series Stranger Things, included Master of Puppets in the script during the writing process, explained Hannah Davis.

Davis, the Director of Creative Sync Licensing at QPrime Management (also Metallica's longtime management team), was the once who first discussed the potential collaboration with Stranger Things music supervisor Nora Felder.

"The song was scripted in by The Duffer Brothers, so it was in their mind from the very beginning," Davis recalled.

"Nora reached out to me in November 2020. They were shooting bits and pieces when they could because, of course, it was the pandemic. Nora ran me through the scene and explained the character of Eddie Munson to me."

"Because he was a new character, there wasn’t a real reference for how much of a ‘fan’ he was, so Nora explained he was a metalhead and that the fans would love him. She detailed how it started with him playing the riff on guitar, a visual instrumental, and then Metallica’s recording would come in. We didn’t know the total scope in terms of how long it would play or how exactly the song would be used. For example: would it play through or stop/start? But everyone was so excited that it was a quick ‘yes.’"

In a follow up, a behind-the-scenes video posted by Stranger Writers, the official Twitter account for the show's writer's room, Quinn is shown practicing the song, along to an actual recording of Master of Puppets.
