Papa John's Gives 10,000 Pizza Slices For Free To Celebrate 'Bitcoin Pizza Day'

22/05/2021

It was back in May 22, 2010, that Laszlo Hanyecz agreed to pay 10,000 Bitcoins for two delivered Papa John's Pizza's pizzas.

At the time, it was the first-ever documented purchase of a product using Bitcoin.

Hansyecz, who was a programmer based in Florida, U.S. working for online retail company GoRuck, said that the pizzas were cheese topped with onions, sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes, and all but without “all sorts of ridiculous things” like the fish top.

“I just want to report that I successfully traded 10,000 bitcoins for pizza. Thanks jercos!”

The transaction was finalized over IRC chats, with the Bitcoins were quoted at $41 at the time of the offer.

Laszlo Hanyecz in May 2010, and his pizzas bought using Bitcoins.

That day is later known as the 'Bitcoin Pizza Day.'

A decade and a year later, the price of the ever-increasing popular cryptocurrency is sitting well above $30,000, per coin.

To celebrate the 11th anniversary of the 'Bitcoin Pizza Day,' Papa John's is giving away 10,000 free slices of pizza to the first 50 customers who ask for the Bitcoin Pizza Deal at each of its Jacksonville Papa John’s location.

And to make it even more interesting, Papa John's Pizzas is offering those customers the option to get a free Bitcoin-inspired large pizza.

The number of pizzas, which is 10,000, is chosen to commemorate the historical transaction of Hanyecz.

And because the initiative is to celebrate an anniversary, the deal is for one day only, which was on May 22, 2021.

Justin Falciola, the Chief Insights & Technology Officer at Papa John's International, said:

"Celebrating National Bitcoin Pizza Day felt like a natural extension of Papa John's historical tie to the Bitcoin story. We always strive to have fun as a brand, and we hope giving a nod to this legendary tale brings joy to our customers."

"It's great for consumer brands to show that they're aware of trends and emerging technologies. The benefit to this is meeting consumers where they are and continuing to build a meaningful connection."

When asked what the future holds for bitcoin, Falciola said he cannot say for sure.

"We have always prioritized forward-thinking and new technological advancements in the food and beverage space so we are interested to see the direction payment and ordering processes take in the coming years."

While Hanyecz famously bought Papa John's Pizza's pizzas, others on the internet seem to also care to celebrate the day.

For example, it was reported that a group of "incredible strangers on the internet" were treating people worldwide to a million free slices of pizzas, by selling thousands of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Sam Weinrott, aka 'Snackman', a member of PizzaDAO’s Rare Pizzas who initiated this, said that the initiative is meant to help those pizzerias around the world that have been affected by the 'COVID-19' coronavirus pandemic.

PizzaDAO said that it has onboarded roughly 380 pizza shops in six continents since first being conceived on Clubhouse in February 2021.

Weinrott described the effort as a “global bake sale,” with 51% of the proceeds going to pizzerias and the remaining 49% going toward paying the team.
