People won't die without the internet. But in the modern days of computing and technology, the internet has helped brought a lot of possibilities and opportunities.

As a result, living without the internet to many people, almost certainly can affect their well-being and their ability to lean and work.

In 2020 alone, India experienced 8,927 hours of internet blackouts, most of which happened in the conflict Region of Jammu and Kashmir.

The internet shutdown and other restrictions had a serious impact on people’s livelihood in the region, with a report published by the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce saying that businesses there have lost over $5.3 billion after the blackout.

But this time, India is finally restoring full 4G coverage in the region, after almost 17 months the internet was first blocked.

The announcement was made official by the government’s official spokesperson Rohit Kansal.

The internet blackout in Jammu and Kashmir was one of the longest-running internet shutdowns in democratic countries.

While connections in the region have experienced many ups and downs for years, the 17 months of no connection happened following India's Home Minister Amit Shah who moved to abolish Article 370 in the parliament to strip the region off of its autonomy.

The government had to block internet and communication services for millions of people in the region, saying that it wanted to control the unrest and misinformation.

It even had to file a case against people who use VPNs to bypass its regulations.

After the state is reconstituted as two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, the government stepped up to finally ease the restrictions.

Citizens first had internet connection restored to only a handful of websites, and later, to only those places with "low threshold for terrorist activities".

Connection was slowly restored with hope and skepticism.
