” What is Freight ?” Asked and Answered

Very often, a lot of people confuse the answer to the question “what is freight?” To explain it in very simple terms, freight is the cargo or shipment of goods which is transported in bulk from one location to another via air, land or sea. “Freight transportation” is the term used to describe the process of carrying the goods from one place to another. Another term which is frequently used during this process is freight collect. It simply means that the person who receives the freight will pay for all its costs when he receives his consignment.

Needless to say, the most common method of transportation of goods is via land. The transport is divided into two sections – freight which can be carried via trucks, and that which has to be carried via trains. In both the cases, you need to take care of which company to hire to deliver your goods, do the paperwork, make the payments, etc. Most sellers/manufacturers use this method to get their goods from their factories/warehouses or godowns to shops in order to sell it to the public. In the second case or transportation, heavier cargo which cannot be moved via trucks is shipped via the railways. In many cases, shippers use a combination of rails and trucks to get their cargo delivered. But this proves to be a hassle for a lot of people, which is why they prefer hiring a professional freight forwarding company to do their job for them. Freight Collect (also known as Freight Prepaid) can also be opted for if you’re unable to raise enough money to pay on the spot for the delivery.

Sometimes, waterways have to be used to move goods from one place to the other. In such cases, the goods/consignment is stacked and secured in its place. Their movement is kept to the bare minimum because movement during transportation can prove to be detrimental/hazardous in the cases of certain consignments. Ships or boats can be used to navigate through seas, rivers, lakes and sometimes even oceans for delivery of the goods. It is the most cost effective way of transporting items that have to be delivered to a far off location

Air freight is used when the goods have to be shipped without any delay in time. And even though delivery via air is the quickest, it’s also the most expensive. As mentioned earlier, a lot of professional freight transportation companies make use of a combination of methods of transportations to get the goods delivered on time. While the heavier cargo might be delivered via rails/ships, the light cargo is sent via trucks/aircrafts. It all depends upon the availability of time of delivery of the freight, as well as the budget that is to be spent on them.

At the receiving port, the cargo/freight is dropped off from the mode of transportation and then is loaded either into containers, trucks of a rail car so that it can reach its final destination. In rare cases, aircrafts are used to drop the cargo off in locations where access through land or water is not possible. So now you have a detailed answer to your question “what is freight?” as well as information about terms like freight transportation, freight collect etc. Keep an eye on our blog for more such informative articles.
