Bicycle Crashes in Michigan

The increasing number of bicycles on Michigan highways needs education for both motorists and riders. Despite the growing popularity of riding in our state, there has been little progress made to ensure the safety of cyclists. More than 70% of bicycle accidents in Michigan occur during daylight hours, suggesting that many motorists are either careless or distracted.

In addition, motorists and bicycles alike are accountable for abiding by any posted traffic regulations. Sidewalk riding is illegal in several jurisdictions due to traffic regulations or specific legislation. Furthermore, bikers have the same legal protections and responsibilities as pedestrians while using sidewalks and crosswalks.

Bicyclists in the state of Michigan still face the problem of drivers who are distracted or not paying attention. Common causes of bicycle accidents in our state include:

  • Disobeying traffic signals or going too fast might be considered reckless driving.
  • Turning in the wrong direction (usually, turning right with a bike on the right side or turning left at a crossroads).
  • Distractions for motorists, such as texting while driving, disregarding bike lanes, driving on sidewalks, walkways, and crosswalks, etc.

Crosswalks are one of the most dangerous places for cyclists because motorists who fail to slow down or yield are far more likely to collide with a bike, perhaps causing catastrophic injury. Sometimes, a motorist drives into a roadway without looking and collides with a bicycle that is following all traffic laws.
