Data on Pedestrian Crashes in Michigan

Accidents involving pedestrians are becoming more frequent on a national and state level. In reality, nearly all of the 2,300 or so pedestrians harmed in collisions in Michigan last year had severe injuries. Even worse, these mishaps led to almost 150 fatalities, which was significantly lower than the previous year but still shockingly high when compared to prior years.

To make matters worse, sloppy or reckless driving is to blame for the majority of pedestrian incidents. Among the most frequent causes of pedestrian accidents are the following:

  • Reckless driving at high speeds, particularly in urban locations with many people.
  • Disregarding stop signs and red lights, especially when approaching junctions.
  • Exceeding legal speed limits in violation of traffic signs and rules.
  • Driving too fast in residential areas or in close proximity to places with higher pedestrian activity, like school zones.
  • Motorists who reverse out of a driveway or private parking area without checking their surroundings.
  • Distraction from technological devices like radios and cell phones, etc.
  • Driving in an unsafe manner for roadway conditions, such as in inclement weather (like heavy rain or snow).
  • Driving when intoxicated or fatigued or while using drugs or alcohol.

Unfortunately, if they are struck by a car, pedestrians are much more likely to sustain severe injuries or pass away. Pedestrians sustain the majority of serious injuries since the majority of cars, including SUVs, sedans, trucks, and vans, may weigh up to 4,000 pounds. From head trauma and traumatic brain injuries to bruises, broken bones, and even death, pedestrians often suffer critical wounds.

Thankfully, persons who sustain injuries in pedestrian accidents as a result of another party’s negligence may be able to pursue justice down the road. Our attorneys at Christopher Trainor & Associates will zealously pursue the maximum amount of compensation you are entitled to if you or a loved one suffered injuries or died in a pedestrian accident in Kentwood.
