Greenville, MI – Police Seeking Hit-and-Run Driver After Deadly Pedestrian Crash on Wise Rd

Greenville, MI (August 9, 2023) – According to the Michigan State Police, the driver of a Volkswagen Jetta crashed into a group of three teenagers on Wise Road, killing a 14-year-old from Greenville and injuring his two friends.

On Tuesday evening, MSP troopers responded to the scene and discovered that the driver of the VW sedan struck three Pedestrian children and then fled the scene. Witnesses heard and saw the collision, though officers said they’ve yet to find local footage or surveillance of the incident.

Lieutenant Michelle Robinson of the MSP asked for the public’s help in identifying the suspect driver and vehicle, which likely has a damaged windshield and front end.

The MSP is handling the ongoing Accident investigation in the interim and has not provided further details about the victims involved.

We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the deceased child’s family. Our thoughts are with the injured victims in hopes of their full recovery.

Pedestrian Injuries & Deaths in Michigan

The incidence of pedestrian accidents is increasing, both nationally and within individual states. In fact, almost all of the more than 2,300 pedestrians injured in crashes in Michigan last year were seriously hurt. Even worse, these accidents resulted in approximately 150 deaths, which was down marginally from the previous year but remained terribly high compared to past years.

To add insult to injury, most pedestrian accidents result from careless or reckless driving. The following are among the most common reasons for pedestrian accidents:

  • Negligence in driving at high speeds, especially in metropolitan areas with a high number of pedestrians.
  • Ignoring stop signs and red lights, particularly at intersections.
  • Disobeying traffic signs and regulations by exceeding posted speeds.
  • Driving too fast in residential areas or around schools with an elevated level of foot traffic.
  • Motorists failing to check their surroundings before reversing out of a private parking space or driveway.
  • Not looking both ways before making a turn.
  • Distraction from electronic gadgets such as cell phones, radios, etc.
  • Driving carelessly in adverse weather conditions (such as severe rain or snow).
  • Getting behind the wheel under the influence of drugs or alcohol or when fatigued.

Unfortunately, pedestrians have a far higher risk of serious injury or death if they are hit by a car. Because most vehicles, from SUVs to sedans and trucks or vans, can weigh up to 4,000 pounds, pedestrians suffer the brunt of major wounds. Some of the most common kinds of injuries sustained in pedestrian crashes are:

  • Brain damage, including concussions
  • Spinal cord injury and subsequent quadriplegia
  • Scarring and broken bones
  • Death, paralysis, and/or permanent disability

Thankfully, those who are hurt in pedestrian accidents due to someone else’s negligence may be able to seek justice in the aftermath.
