Pontiac, MI – Five Hurt, Two Kids in Critical Condition After Perry St Townhome Fire

Pontiac, MI (July 25, 2023) – After being rescued from a townhouse fire in Pontiac on Tuesday morning, two small children were listed in critical condition, according to area authorities.

Around 12:35 a.m., the Waterford Regional Fire Department was called to the Perry Street Cornerstone Townhomes. Heavy smoke was billowing from the building when they arrived, and they found two children inside a second-floor bedroom, and both kids were apparently trapped. EMTs rushed the two to the Children’s Hospital after they were rescued.

Two other people, an adult and a baby, were also in the residence at the time. According to the police report, the adult escaped the second floor after tossing the baby to a witness. Both were hurt, along with an onlooker.

Two apartments sustained severe fire and smoke damage, while the remaining four apartments were undamaged. The American Red Cross is assisting residents, and police are still working to investigate the incident.

Our thoughts and best wishes for a full recovery go out to the injured victims and their family members.

Residential Fire Injuries in Michigan

An estimated 253,500 one- and two-family residential structure fires occur annually in the United States, resulting in approximately 2,150 fatalities, 8,775 injuries, and $5.3 billion in property losses.

Moreover, one- and two-family residential building fires account for 66% of all residential structure fires, the largest subdivision of residential building fires. According to local fire departments, 1.35 million fires were reported in the United States in 2021 alone, resulting in 3,800 civilian fatalities and 14,700 injuries. In the past year, firefighters responded to a fire every 23 seconds, on average.

Tragically, the majority of these fires rapidly fill a building with toxic gases and smog. More victims of house fires perish from smoke inhalation than from the flames, and an entire residence can be consumed within five minutes.

In addition to being compelled to abandon their residences, victims who survive these blazes may be left with significant injuries. Typically, homeowners must file an insurance claim and negotiate with adjusters under their homeowner’s policy to be compensated after a house fire. Unfortunately, several providers of these policies are notorious for offering insufficient settlement amounts to compensate victims for their injuries and other losses.
