Saginaw, MI – Woman Killed in Head-on Collision at Washington & 6th Aves

Saginaw, MI (July 19, 2023) – On Tuesday afternoon, July 18, a woman from Ogemaw County was killed in a collision that took place in Saginaw, according to local police.

Per a statement provided by Det. Sgt. Matthew Gerow of the Saginaw Police Department, officers were called to the Accident at about 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday. The incident reportedly took place on North Washington Avenue, close to the intersection with North 6th Avenue.

Gerow said that the accident involved a black 2007 Dodge Caliber, which was traveling northbound along Washington, and a gray 2013 Ford pickup truck.

A 51-year-old Ogemaw County man, who was driving the Dodge, allegedly lost control, crossed over into the southbound lanes, and hit the Ford truck head-on.

A 37-year-old female passenger in the Dodge sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital, Gerow stated. The occupants of the Ford truck suffered only minor injuries, though Gerow did not clarify whether the Dodge’s driver was hurt or hospitalized.

Police say alcohol and speed likely played a role in the wreck, but the active and ongoing investigation is being handled by the SPD. Witnesses who saw the collision were asked to step forward in the interim.

We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the deceased woman’s family. Our thoughts are with the injured victims in hopes of their full recovery.

Deadly Vehicle Accidents in Michigan

Major vehicle accidents happen all too often on Michigan’s highways, interstates, and side streets. Unfortunately, a driver’s carelessness or negligent actions are to blame for these crashes, including driving while intoxicated or fatigued, speeding, texting and other distractions behind the wheel, and reckless driving.

From rollovers and T-bone collisions to rear-end and head-on wrecks, sideswipes, and single-vehicle accidents, these incidents lead to devastating consequences for victims. And while some collisions end in minor injuries or simply cause property damage, many others result in fatalities or serious injuries to the victims involved. For instance, according to the most current data from the Michigan Department of Transportation and troopers with the Michigan State Police, out of the 323,048 incidents involving passenger vehicles, SUVs, or vans in 2021, 1,111 of these resulted in fatalities.
