Sweet Sweet Vinyl: Our Record Store Day Picks

Asking a mate to share their favourite Song is always a tough one. Pop the question at 4am after a night on the razz and the answer is apt to be very different to an idle Tuesday afternoon. So, when it came to asking the office to share their most beloved tracks, it's no surprise the results were a mishmash spanning everything from 90s trip hop to psychedelic rock...

Gareth Morgan, Managing Director

The chosen one:Jane's Addiction - Ocean Size

"I used to play guitar and this is one of the first songs I taught myself. It reminds me of being a teenager and hanging out with my mates (and of when I grew a goatee and dyed my hair black to look more like Dave Navarro).
"

Natasha Aghalar, Copywriter

The chosen one: Goo Goo Dolls – Iris

"I love this one, purely because it reminds me of summer 2012. I spent a month travelling east America and Canada and this is one of the many tracks that we played in the mini bus during the long (but fun) drives. Iris reminds me of good times with new people in amazing places."

Sam Roberts, Account Manager

The chosen one: Gogol Bordello  - Wonderlust King.

"When I was 18, I ended up at a festival in Belgium on a whim; on the morning of the first day I was slightly confused, hungover and questioning whether the whole thing was a good idea. Gogol Bordello opened the main stage, and kicked off probably the best 3 days of music (and general disorderly conduct) anyone could wish for."

Amy Lyddon, Account Manager

The chosen one: Incubus - Pardon Me

"Really nostalgic number! It takes me back to school years and family holidays and summer time! The good old days! I saw them live a few years ago and they were unbelievable"

Philip Woodward, Senior Copywriter

The chosen one: Teenage Fanclub - Sparky's Dream

"We’re busting into spring, so I choose Sparky’s Dream by Teenage Fanclub. It literally sounds like sunshine. I don’t know why people take ecstasy when they could just listen to this on repeat instead."

Andrew Stuckey, Account Manager

The chosen one: Kings of Leon - On Call

"This song introduced me to KOL in my third year of uni and represents one of the best times in life. It reminds me of when I met some great friends, had a right ol' laugh and had no cares in the world.

The Kings have been an inspiration to me throughout my twenties and I've seen them 8 times in many different locations across Europe. There are a bunch of KOL records I could choose from but this one from Because of the Times is a real hit and will forever be my go-to tune when times get tough."

Stephanie Lamerton, Copywriter

The chosen one: Meghan Trainor  - No

"Admittedly, Meghan Trainor is not my favourite artist. She is a little too bubble gum pop / High School Musical-esque for my taste. However I thought she deserved a mention in this post for her song content and the messages she portrays to young girls.

She sings about how you should embrace your natural figure and not strive to unrealistic celeb ideals, how she expects her one-day future husband to love and respect her modern career, plus she encourages young girls to stay true themselves and not let boys get too touchy-feely. It makes a pleasant change from the “work, work” sexy tunes that seem to be littering the radio waves at the moment."

Jenna Loman, Senior Account Manager

The chosen one: Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give you up

"OK, super cheesy one coming up. You might wanna light some candles.

It reminds me of my best friend back home – we were out one night and talking about theme songs and what would be the soundtrack to your life… I swear to god we have never spoken about this song previously but we both said this song at the exact same moment. "

Chris Gurner, Team Leader

The chosen one: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Power of Equality

"It’s always tough to choose a favourite song, as it all depends where your mood takes you at the time. A song that reminds of my friends, great times and my youth has to Red Hot Chili Peppers - Power of Equality."

Carys Richards, Content Co-ordinator

The chosen one: Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel

"This song had an effect on me because of Watership Down, I remember watching that film religiously when I was a kid and this song always made me cry. It's one that always sticks with me"

Rosella Pollard, Copywriter

The chosen one: Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy

"I saw Massive Attack headline Glastonbury 2014 on the Sunday night. The sun was setting, there were thousands in the crowd and everyone was weary from a cocktail of constant partying and minimal sleep. They performed this absolute blockbuster and it felt like a bright light coming on. Sheer euphoria.

It's such an uplifting song, I love the build-up and Shara Nelson's voice is ridiculous. It's the kind of record that could get you to the finish line of a marathon or be played at the end of the world. Zing!"

Paul Hunter, Marketing Manager

The chosen one: Bon Iver  - Beth/Rest

"Sure, Bon Iver are a tad weird. And I still don't quite understand why Justin Vernon sings in falsetto approximately 99% of the time. But, Bon Iver manage to create ethereal music with incredibly rich and complex textures. Paired with Vernon's genius songwriting, they've written some incredibly inspiring music and this one is my favourite."

Owain Matthews, Business Development Manager

The chosen one: Blur - Country House

"At the age of 9 my older brother overheard me listening to some generic early 90’s pop music (probably PJ and Duncan’s “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble”) and was having none of it.

He sat me down, put his over-sized headphones over my ears, and told me I wasn’t allowed to get up until I listened to the entire Great Escape album.

Within a track or two I was hooked…"

Jason Jacobs, SEO Specialist

The chosen one: Bon Jovi - You Give Love a Bad Name

"It makes me want to rock out in a pair of zebra leggings...'Nuff said!"

David Wilkinson, Senior PPC Account Manager

The chosen one: Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication

"This was one of the first albums I bought in my adolescence. It really opened my mind to music. I remember it being a summer’s day and being in a really cool record shop at the time.

RHCP were my favourite band growing up and inspired me in a lot of ways. I’ve seen them live 3 times and was heartbroken when John Frusciante left the band. In my opinion they have never been the same since. I was also part of the crowd during the recording of the Live in Hyde Park album."

Rebecca Faulkner, Account Manager

The chosen one: Meatloaf  - Bat Out of Hell

"Hard to narrow it down to one but probably a bit of classic meat loaf, always reminds me of holidays as a kid when there were no worries in the world! Magic."

Ben Magee, Senior Account Manager

The chosen one: David Ford - Songs for the Road

"A laid-back masterpiece from an incredible songwriter. It takes me back to my first year of uni, chilling out under the stars after a long night of working or partying (most probably the latter) and then waking up the next day to do it all again!

No matter the situation, this song is the ultimate chill out track for me, and even though I’m still yet to see him perform live it’s on my bucket list!"

Corey Francis, SEO Specialist

The chosen one: Run the Jewels - Close your Eyes

"I’m a huge fan of RTJ, and Rage Against the Machine were my favourite band as a kid so it’s an obvious choice. I saw them in 2015 at Banksy’s Dismaland in Weston-Super-Mare and they were immense, even my girlfriend (who had never heard them) was impressed and was getting ‘gangsta’ and whacking out some impressive moves.

I think she might be more obsessed with them than me, now. "

Rachel Bloom, Senior Account Manager

The chosen one: Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid

"I absolutely love this whole album, but this song in particular is so beautifully written. My husband and I had this as the recessional song at our wedding too which makes it even more special to me!"

Richard Foulkes, Business Development Manager

The chosen one: Electric Light Orchestra - Out of the Blue

"Birmingham City Football Club walk onto the pitch with this as their theme tune. Obvious choice."

Alix Charles, Account Manager

The chosen one: Ooh Ah (My Life Be Like) by Grits ft. Toby Mac

"Aside from appearing in a fairly good film (Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift) it’s my go-to track when unwinding after a long day or any stressful moment. It also makes a pretty good addition to playlists on long journeys."

Cher Cheung, Account Manager

The chosen one: 一生何求 (The Meaning of Life) by Danny Chan

"It means a lot to me, as it reminds me of my Mum humming to this in the kitchen, while teaching me to write and read Cantonese"

Kris Davies, Operations Manager

The chosen one: Reflekt Feat. Delline Bass  - Need to feel loved

"It reminds me of a summer of climbing around Europe just after university. Amazing times."

Lianne Jones, Team Leader

The chosen one: Jackie Wilson – Reet Petite

"I used to listen to this on vinyl with my grandparents when I was little and have many a fond memory of dancing around on the landing to it with them. As a little girl, I spent a lot of time with my nan and gramps and this song always reminds me of all the fun we had; it never fails to put a smile on my face."

Matt Trevett, PR Specialist

The chosen one: Guns N’ Roses, Sweet Child O’ Mine

"It’s 1988, we’ve just run through fields from our coach stuck in heavy traffic to see the opening act at the Monsters of Rock festival in Donnington Park. Little known Guns N’ Roses came on stage and blew us all away with Sweet Child O’ Mine a standout song as well as Welcome to the Jungle.

Fast forward almost 28 years. Izzy my six year old daughter and I will often be seen (and sometimes heard) driving around Cardiff singing along to Sweet Child O’ Mine in our car. We’ve claimed it as our song and the lyrics have a special meaning to us."

The Liberty Anthem

"I can't remember how this song caught on but at one point we were playing it daily. It's an instant mood booster and Eddie is a legend."

Fancy listening to our eclectic selection? You'll find all of our fine choices in this snazzy playlist. Crank up the volume and enjoy.
