Montana Announces Conservation Initiatives for 2016

The USDA Montana National Resources Conservation Service announced conservation initiatives for 2016 this week. The funding will be provided by the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, and will be used to target specific resource concerns in Montana in 2016, which include On-Farm Energy, Organic, Seasonal High Tunnel, Prairie Pothole Wetland and Grassland Retention, Honey Bee Pollinators, Big Horn Irrigation Improvement, and Drought in the Missouri Headwaters Basin.

Of particular note is the $1.1 million in funding that will be allocated to mitigating the drought in the Missouri Headwaters Basin. NRCS will accept applications from landowners interested in practices that will increase water conservation, improve riparian, floodplain, and water management, and promote upland management conservation. Specifically, those practices could include improvements to irrigation infrastructure and efficiency, improvements in water storage capacity and off-stream stockwater tanks, and soil health practices to increase soil moisture holding capacity.

For an overview of each of the initiatives, as well as a more detailed look at the conservation practices suggested to mitigate the drought in the Missouri Headwaters Basin, follow the links below:
