Transactions in Dynamics AX – Warehouse Management

Within the WMS processes, the Reserve Inventory step that must occur after a transaction is created, but before the transaction is released to the Warehouse to be picked and shipped. The transaction cannot be released if the Reservation does not occur.

The reservation for all warehouses that use the R3 Warehouse Management processes will always use the Reservation Hierarchy setup on the item. So the location for example will never be a reserved dimension, but each item could be reserved at a different level, but typically reservations will be similar across most items and primarily differ where batch or serial numbers are used.

All dimensions that are required to be entered for the item, but not a part of the reservation will be entered by the picker. For example, the location will never be part of a WMS reservation and will always require the picker to enter or verify the location the inventory is picked from, and often times the batch number and serial number would also be entered by the picker if not part of the reservation hierarchy.

These reservations must occur prior to releasing, unless the Batch Process is run for releasing order lines to the warehouse for picking and shipping. This batch process can perform the reservation for you if the parameter mentioned earlier is set on the warehouse record.
