Auld Lang Syne arr. Paul Clark, Grade 3
Perhaps the oldest song of friendship, Robert Burns wrote the words to “Auld Lang Syne” in 1788 and set them to music using the melody of a previously existing Scottish folk song. This tune was later changed to the version most often heard today. Both melodies are presented here in this masterful Paul Clark arrangement that musically evokes warm memories of the past, and a positive feeling of friendship and hope for the future. Opportunities for musicality and expressive playing make it appropriate for bands of a wide range of experience. “Auld Lang Syne” is the perfect closing selection for your Holiday, or any, concert!

Along the River’s Shore by James Swearingen, Grade 3
The beautiful and stunning Navesink River is an estuary, approximately eight miles long and located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. This natural landmark inspired the composer to create a musical work that reflected the positive spirit that he found to be pervasive throughout the surrounding communities. When asked to describe the beauty of the river, people would often reply “simply breathtaking!”

Danza Magicala (Magical Dances) by David Shaffer, Grade 3
“Danza Magicala” is a set of magical and energetic dances. Opening with a mysterious woodwind motive complemented by creative percussion effects, brass joins in with a rousing answer to the quirky woodwind motives. A subdued 3/4 section introduces and features the backing of the auxiliary instruments within the percussion section. A recapitulation quickly leads into the breathtaking finale of this piece. Excellent percussion section writing will keep your entire percussionist section involved. “Danza Magicala” is sure to be a huge favorite with developing bands!

Santa’s Magical Midnight Ride by David Shaffer, Grade 2
The story tells it all: Santa Claus is on his way! His sleigh is filled with gifts! The weather is clear, perfect for the reindeer to guide him on his Christmas Eve trek. Away we go! Santa knows how to put on a show. He’s getting closer, above the roofs, and as he descends, you’ll hear the reindeer hoofs. Toward the chimney Santa goes, hoping he fits…oh no… it’s a tight squeeze! As he lands with a thump, but Santa’s all right; he never fails! After all, he’s tough as nails. Recovered from his fall he leaves presents for one and all. Then back to the sleigh, so much to do. Don’t worry, he won’t forget about you. The stars will always be his guide on “Santa’s Magical Midnight Ride!” Scored for maximum sound effects within the percussion section, this will be the hit of any holiday concert!

Viva Noel arr. David Shaffer, Grade 3
“Viva Noel” is a medley of glorious holiday favorites in a fast/slow/fast form. Opening with a musical fanfare based on the French hymn “He is Born the Holy Child” the arrangement transitions quickly into a fanciful rendition of “Deck the Halls.” The following section opens with a beautiful brass choir adaptation of “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear” and develops into a lush, full band setting of this charming carol. The finale begins as a quick, light version of “Here We Come a-Wassailing” ending with a declarative brass fanfare with small bits of “Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella” and “Angels We Have Hear on High.” This high-energy holiday arrangement features all sections of the ensemble with exceptional emphasis on the percussion writing.

Excelsior by Karl L. King/arr. James Swearingen, Grade 2.5
Raise your baton and prepare yourself for a rewarding highlight moment as you conduct Karl King’s celebrated galop, aptly titled “Excelsior.” Your musicians will marvel at the clever writing style that is incorporated throughout the entire piece. And let us not forget the audience – much toe-tapping and the thunderous sound of applause following the last note is certain! This is the perfect galop to include at your next concert.

Stardust arr. Paul Clark, Grade 3
Written in 1927, “Stardust” has been recorded over 1,500 times and is now considered to be part of the Great American Songbook. This stellar Paul Clark arrangement includes the 16 bar introduction, followed by solo trumpet on the first verse. Full ensemble plays the 2nd verse, with a solo trumpet ending that’s as pretty as stardust. A classic arrangement of a great American standard. Perfect for adult community bands as well!

Twisted Tango by Larry Neeck, Grade 2
With the rhythms and style of an authentic tango, “Twisted Tango” is a light-hearted novelty that gradually morphs into a wacky and slightly “twisted” composition. The characteristic musical themes are punctuated by dissonant and exaggerated dynamic effects in each section of the band, resulting in a humorous and exciting work. Everyone will love this truly entertaining change-of-pace for your next concert!
