What Will You Do With Your Fiber?

You’ve sheared your alpacas.  Now what do you do with the fiber?  For those who want to do more than bag and store this precious commodity, there are many options.  Alpaca as a Fiber industry is beginning to boom, and it is exciting!

  1.  Sell it as raw fiber.
  2.  Send to a fiber coop and receive product in return.
  3. Have it processed at a fiber mill.
  4. Process it yourself.

I made a trip to Morning Star Fiber Mill in Wooster, Ohio this morning.  Piled to the ceiling in my mini-van was last year’s fiber.  We currently raise primarily suri alpacas, but a local farm that raises huacayas has been giving me their fiber for about the last four years.  Unfortunately like others, they don’t have the time or the interest to fool with it.

Not all mills process suri fiber.  Some that do are:

New Era Fiber
Wild West Fiber Mill
