The Alpaca Yarn Company

We carry Alpaca Yarn from The Alpaca Yarn Company, to compliment our own Farm Yarns.  Take a look at the most luxurious yarn products in the world, which we carry both in The Fiber Studio at Alpaca Meadows and through our online store.  Since 2004, out of a little warehouse in a historic district of York, Pennsylvania, The Alpaca Yarn Company strives to offer the best and brightest alpaca yarns and fibers.  From the soft simplicity of Classic Alpaca to the forty hand-dyed colorways of their Paca-Peds sock line, they promise “each yarn will bring a smile to your face and finished products you can truly be proud of”.

Owner, Beth Lutz Drop Spindling in Peru

Beth Lutz is sole owner of The Alpaca Yarn company.  In 2004 she made the life changing decision to purchase the company, then known as America’s Alpaca.  Her love of the fiber industry is obvious in her dedication to the company and her drive to provide the best alpaca yarns available.  She’s a fantastic fiber artist and also owns a small alpaca farm called Painted Spring Farm Alpacas, so she has both hands, both feet and all her heart wrapped in alpaca!  Lucky lady!

Beth writes in her Ravelry profile, “I’m one of the lucky ones who found a way to make fiber and yarn my life. My husband and I have lived on a farm for almost 20 years. After learning to spin, I decided that I needed to raise animals that could produce fiber for me to spin. In 1999, with four of my knitting friends, I opened a yarn store in York, PA called Uncommon Threads. For 11 years, I worked in the store and had the best time of my life. In October of 2010, I decided it was time to move on and sold the store to one of our customers who is now having the time of her life owning a yarn store.

About 13 years ago, I started acquiring alpacas and now have somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 or more (depending on the day you ask).

About 9 years ago, I was fortunate enough to be in the right place in my life to be able to purchase the yarn division of the North American Fiber Co-op, which is now The Alpaca Yarn Company.

So no matter what day or time of day it is, I’m either with my animals, the alpaca yarn, or in my store surrounded by fiber.

In my free time, I design knitwear for The Alpaca Yarn Company, spin and I’m learning to weave.

Life is good!”

Heather Sakall-Bowen, Hand-Dyer

Heather Sakall-Bowen, aka the GirlGoneLoopy, hasn’t met a color she doesn’t like.  In fact, she lists her favorite colors as “anything deep and saturated”.  This makes her perfect for running the dye pots for The AYC. Heather’s hand dyeing journey began in 2005 and hasn’t stopped since!  She came to The AYC in late 2012 as part time warehouse & dyeing help.  When the full-time dyeing position opened up in April 2014, she stepped up to the plate. Heather’s passion about color and drive to find new and interesting color effects keeps her on her toes in the dye room.
