Spring 2014 trend: boldly botanical prints

It's the same every year: April showers bring Spring flowers. But this season's floral trend is a little different, as designers go for big botanical prints for spring 2014.

Inspired by hand-drawn nature studies and illustrated botanical guides, this spring's blooms have an artsy, antique feel. In some cases, that translates to lush, tropical foliage and blooms, as in Cameo's Winter Wind Dress, as well as the Palm Print designed by Penfield for its spring 2014 women's collection.

The highly detailed, illustrated style of these prints, along with their usually big scale, makes for a really youthful take on a classic spring motif — a far cry from the frumpy florals of yesteryear.

For something that looks more like its drawn from an artist's canvass than a naturalist's guide book, a few labels are taking a different route with floral prints this season, though they're still keeping things big and bold.

Designers like Dries Van Noten and brands like Stylestalker are serving up painted style blooms on a big scale, and popping those bright petals against a slick black background.

So between the porcelain look of Botanical Prints on white and the moody black background of painted blooms, this season's take on the floral trend spans from day to night, and from a delicate vintage feel to expressive, artsy and modern.
