The idea that a 4x4 vehicle is all that you need to survive in the Sierra Nevada mountains has once again been proven wrong.  A lady recently became stranded with her boy friend as they drove from her mother's home to their residence.  Their Jeep Cherokee wasn't able to make the off road trip in the deep snow.  While her boy friend went looking for help, she stayed with the Cherokee.  When he didn't return, she set out of foot as well.  After drudging along, she sought shelter in a hollowed out tree. 

In order to sustain herself, she ate snow and finished off the tomatoes they had brought along on the trip. The tomatoes saved the day.  After 6 days of being alone and without food, Paula Lane was rescued by her brother who was part of a search party.  What a miracle!  Unfortunately for her boy friend, he did not survive the ordeal.  His body was found shortly after Ms. Lane was rescued.

The obvious thought of tracking them with their cell phones was considered, but they were so far away from cell towers that the police were not able to ping their phones.  Likewise, the couple was not able to call for help.  

This half tragic story shows again how people think that with a 4x4 you can get through anything.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.  As winter appoaches, people need to always be prepared to take caution ahead of bravado.  When the snow is deeper than the axles or when the roads are icy, there is nothing you can do with either an off road 4x4 or a truck.  It is wiser to wait than to wallow away trying to push though in conditions that are potentially hazardous.
