The difference between Programme, Portfolio and Project management

As you know we are specialist in ITSM testing, so we are often engaged on a specific piece of work to deliver a single specific Outcome – a project.

Sometimes, we’re engaged on a group of projects to deliver similar outcomes but not adding up to a single, but larger outcome – a Portfolio of outcomes or projects

Often we will be engage across of series of projects that deliver their own outcomes, but those outcome deliver a single, much larger piece of business change – a Programme.

Is that clear? I think so, but perhaps it could be clearer. Perhaps a programme can be seen as a group of projects that build upon each other to achieve that business change and it might be across a period of time. A portfolio of project relationship may only be due to the business, business unit or personnel delivering that project.

Do you think it can be better explained than this? Probably and we’d welcome your suggestions via the usual channels
