15 Tips to Get a Job Fast

There are several options available to save you time and energy as well as better results when searching for a job.  Here are 15 tips to help you get a job faster.

  1. Save time by using advance search options on job boards.  All job boards have an “Advanced Search” option where you can use key words, salary, location, etc to pinpoint the specific job that may match your background.
  2. Applying for every job isn’t always a good idea.    Focus on jobs you are truly a match for your skills.  Sending resumes out to every job available is just a waste of your time.
  3. Don’t stop applying for jobs.  Most job seekers are rejected by over 15 employers before landing a job. Learn from your mistakes and keep applying until you get the right offer.
  4. One Cover Letter does not fit all.  You should write a specific cover letter for each job you are applying for.  Mention some “buzz” words in job posting.  You have about 3 seconds to get the attention of someone receiving your resume and you want to make sure they take the time to learn you.
  5. One Resume does not fit all.  The concept for the Cover Letter is the same concept for the resume.  If there is part of the job that is emphasized in the ad and it’s a skill you have, be sure to elaborate on that particular skill in the resume.
  6. You don’t need to put ALL your experience on the resume.  Employers want to hire someone that has recent experience in a similar role to the job posted.  They don’t care if you did the same job 20 years ago.  The rule of thumb is to go back 10 years on resumes.  Be sure to put the month and date for date job and explain any gaps between jobs.
  7. You can include more than full time work on your resume.  If there was a gap between jobs you can list things like volunteer work.  Something is better than letting an employer think you were happy doing nothing.
  8. Dress like a manager or a successful person in your profession.  The old saying is so true, “you have one chance to make a first impression”.
  9. Be yourself on the interview.  Rehearsed answers, fake smiles, saying what you think the employer wants to hear will only make you appear less than honest.  Let your personality shine through and discuss why your background makes you qualified for the job.
  10. Never say anything bad about your previous employer.  This is a very common mistake.  The employer is going to be thinking about what you will say about them when you decide to move on.
  11. Send a thank-you after the interview.   You will want to show your appreciate for the time the employer took to speak with you as well as express your interest in the job.  As most people don’t take this step, it will make you stand out as very professional.
  12. Networking is essential.  Most jobs are found through networking either in person or on-line.  You never know who someone knows that could help you land a job.
  13. References can make a big difference in getting hired.  References can make or break whether or not you get an offer.  Make sure you know what someone will say if contacted.  Get letters of references to attach to your resume.
  14. It’s acceptable to apply for the same job more than once.  If you weren’t contacted for your dream job the first time and later you see it posted again, you can certainly apply again.  This time take a look at your cover letter and resume to be sure it is customized for this specific job.  Maybe you will get their attention this time.
  15. Polish your shoes.  Yes – employers do look at your shoes.  How you present yourself in the interview is a direct correlation to the respect you show for the company and the opportunity.
