The PSTN to digital switchover is delayed until January 2027

The move from traditional phone lines (PSTN) to digital technology, originally planned to be finished by the end of 2025, has now been extended by over twelve months, with the new deadline set for January 31, 2027. This decision by BT Group is meant to give the telecommunications industry extra time to tackle the challenges of this change.

The Fit To Switch campaign, co-founded by Mat Swift, Chris Pateman, and Adrian Barnard, seeks to raise awareness about the risks of PSTN withdrawal and educate businesses on the transition process. The campaign offers resources to help businesses and channel professionals understand their options and the necessary timelines.

Mat Swift, co-founder of Fit To Switch, expressed relief that BT Group acknowledges the need for more awareness and time. “A consistent and straightforward message for UK businesses and consumers is vital,” he said. “Everyone in this industry wants to ensure a successful upgrade to the UK’s digital connectivity infrastructure. This extension could add to the confusion, but the need to transition to digital alternatives remains the same.”

An Openreach spokesperson emphasised their commitment to supporting communication providers (CPs) in migrating customers to new digital services. “Openreach will continue to work with CP customers to help them migrate their customers off the legacy network as safely and smoothly as possible,” the spokesperson said.

Eli Katz, chair of Comms Council UK, expressed disappointment but acknowledged the necessity of the deadline extension. “This is hugely frustrating given the investment in replacement products and services,” he said. “Comms Council UK has been calling for more coordination and support from government and Ofcom to support this shift.”

Itret Latif, CEO of the Federation of Communication Services (FCS), highlighted the operational and commercial implications for members due to the revised deadline. “FCS has been working closely with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition. The BT announcement will cause confusion and rework for our members,” he said.

Planet Telecom understands the complexities of the digital switchover and is committed to supporting customers through this transition. We focus on providing clear, straightforward communication and expert support to ensure a smooth migration to digital communication solutions.

With the extended deadline, businesses have more time to evaluate their options and plan for the switch. The Fit To Switch campaign and other industry initiatives are crucial in raising awareness and providing the necessary information to make informed decisions. As the industry moves towards an all-digital future, the collaborative efforts of stakeholders will be essential in ensuring a seamless transition.

The extension of the digital switchover deadline offers an opportunity for businesses to prepare more thoroughly and ensure they are ready for the future of communication.

By staying informed and utilising available resources, businesses can navigate this transition effectively and benefit from the advancements in digital connectivity.
