Home Tips For A Safe Navratri celebration

It’s October, and the Navratri season is fast approaching—but this year, the pandemic causes us to relook at traditional celebrations.

With mass gatherings being frowned upon and people hesitating to step out to shop for new clothes, it looks like public festivities could well turn out to be a low key affair.  Having said that, there’s nothing stopping you from celebrating the spirit of Navratri from the safety of your home. Here’s how to ensure you don’t miss out on the fun.

1. Dance and Song

Navratri literally means ‘nine nights’, and during this time the Goddess Durga is feted with song and dance in all her different forms. In the North, family and friends come together to celebrate through soulful bhajans and vibrant Dandiya Raas and Garba dances. In the South, women visit each other to show off their Kolu, or collections of dolls and figurines. The tenth day is dedicated to Saraswathy, the Goddess of Learning, and many children are initiated into formal learning on this day.

This year, if you cannot safely venture out, a good idea would be to take all your social gatherings online. Stay apart to stay safe, but don’t miss out on the togetherness.

2. Paper Flowers

Flower markets closed, or too crowded? Make your own paper flower garland at home. This is a fun activity that your pre-schoolers could try as well….just be careful with the scissors. You can glue on some glitter and sequins to add some sparkle to your festive decorations.

3. Home-made Sweets

Hesitating to go out to buy sweets? Try your hand at making your own this year; there’s no better time than now to make a foray into the kitchen. Cooked with love, your kaju katli, laddoos and pedas will taste sweeter than ever before. Not ready to trust your culinary skills just yet? Get your sweets home delivered.

4. Home Décor

Navratri is the time of year when homeowners spruce up their homes with a fresh coat of paint, new décor and accessories. If you don’t want to call a painter in, do try painting a wall or two yourself. A bold colour on one wall can make all the difference to your living room. Give it an uneven textured finish, so that your lack of expertise doesn’t really show. Next, bring out your most colourful cushions, curtains and rugs and let the vibrant colours usher in the festive spirit.

5. Diyas and Rangolis

Give your home the traditional touch with diyas and rangolis. Paint terracotta diyas with acrylic paints, and glue on some tiny mirrors as embellishments. As you won’t be calling friends over this year, do make sure that you post pictures online so that they can virtually share in your celebration. Make sure that you don’t use any toxic colours or decorations that could harm the environment.

6. Festive Giving

Sharing is caring, and at festive times we should share our blessings with those who aren’t as fortunate. This year, think of new ways in which you can show that you care. There are many migrant workers who are out of a job due to the pandemic. Help them to celebrate Navratri too, by donating food, clothes, or supplies. Share your time with others; you can volunteer to teach online or help out at a hotline. Donate blood or medical supplies to hospitals. Collect warm clothes and blankets from others in your community, and share them with those who are out in the cold. This festive season, let’s come together and make the world a better place.

Although this year’s celebrations won’t be the same as the previous years, let us keep the joy of the festival going in new and auspicious ways. Explore our tips for a Safe Navratri Celebration and have a happy one!
