She played a pivotal role in the struggle to get her husband out of the Pakistani jail. She along with Sarabjit’s sister, Dalbir Kaur, fought the system for 22 years to get her husband released. Dalbir Kaur passed away due to a heart attack in June. Her last rites will be conducted on June 26 in Bhikhiwind.

Sarabjit was a farmer who by mistake crossed the indo-Pak border after having a few drinks. He was mistaken to be an Indian spy in Pakistan, but the two ladies fought the system and the boundaries to prove his innocence. Eventually, in 2013, after 22 years in jail, Sarabjit was beaten up by his inmates and he succumbed to his injuries.

The struggle was captured with honesty and due respect in the 2016 film ‘Sarabjit’. It showed Sarabjit’s relationship with his wife and sister. The film was directed by Omung Kumar, who got popular with ‘Mary Kom’ (2014). In the film, Randeep Hooda played the role of Sarabjit Singh and the role of Sukhpreet was played by Richa Chadha. The film also featured Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Dalbir Kaur. The film is available on Amazon Prime Video.

People are expressing their condolences on social media and recognising Sukhpreet as a courageous woman.
