A stress free mind is a bowl of creativity

(Sri Sri in Punjab)

Humanitarian and Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar recently visited Punjab where he addressed large masses of people from all backgrounds including academicians, students and scholars at different events.

On 23rd November 2019 Sri Sri visited Faridkot, where he spoke about the importance of mental health, and how meditation is the key to better mental health, while addressing the students and faculty at Baba Farid University of Health Science. “Medical students should have an open mind and should be ready to learn new healing modalities, as medical science keeps getting updated time and again, with new findings sometimes contradicting the previous ones”, he remarked. “Mind should be free from stress and tension. You cannot be healthy if the society is full of tension and fear”, he stated, adding that one should be able to accept criticism without losing one’s smile. He spoke about the health research done by the American scientists emphasizing the need for meditation which increases the Grey Matter Volume(GVM) in the brain. GVM plays an important role in the brain in medical health and cognitive processes; “But for this to work, students need to let go of prejudice against spiritual practices like meditation”, he added.

From the land of Farid, SriSri came to Amritsar. He paid his obeisance in the Golden Temple and then visited the Durgiana Teerath.

The Second day of Gurudev’s Punjab visit started with a talk on ONENESS & NANAK in the Golden Jubilee Foundation Day Celebrations of the prestigious Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. “Punjab is the land of five rivers but its sixth river is the river of wisdom and knowledge which began to flow when, 550 yeras ago, Guru Nanak blessed this land; his compositions are a treasure for the entire mankind”,Sri Sri remarked whilst expressing his wish that Gurbaani (hymns in the central text of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib) should reach all corners of the world. He suggested that instead of searching for peace one should meditate a couple of minutes every day.

Sri Sri congratulated the University for its great achievements, and for being a beautiful, clean, green, happy and a drug-free campus, declaring that being useful for others, and bringing peace in conflict situations shall be the biggest tribute to Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

The evening was an occasion to sit close to the master for knowledge and for the commitment to serve, in an event called GyaanUtsav in Amritsar. Over a thousand people took his guidance on living life wisely. Making more friends, comforting others, being ready for all times, both good and not so good and exhibiting patience are the knowledge nuggets that he offered to the attendees. He also mentioned that spiritual life and material aspirations don’t oppose but complement each other.

On Day 3, Sri Sri addressed the convocation of NIT, Jalandhar where he was also conferred Doctorate degree in NIT, Jalandhar and his key message to the young graduates was, stay happy and contribute your resources in the society with a sense of belongingness and commitment. “In order to keep ourselves updated with the changes in the field of technology we need to keep ourselves fresh and alive; Our perception need to be sharper, our observations need to be focussed and our expressions need to take the right shape. For these we need to attend to our container of information which is our own mind.” remarked Gurudev, emphasizing on the need for a stress free mind and the role of meditation in it. He also mentioned that the technological giants of silicon valley have now realized the benefits of meditation and are now encouraging meditation to their employees. “We need to have creativity, confidence and an undying smile, with courage to take up new challenges; life cannot go on without these aspects in us and technology is one such area where challenges are its language”, he stated, asserting that more students should take up higher studies.

“Just as a chair is neither a table nor a door, though all are wood, we must accept differences but also remember the Oneness of Existence & it is felt nowehere but in one’s heart. The voice of deep experience is what transforms the world; Guru Nanak Dev ji spoke from such experience”, read one of his tweets.

A society that is suffering from limited identities, the message of ONENESS – Ek Omkar that Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji have given us can only be actualised when diverse traditions move together, there is a confluence of thoughts and there is an interfaith dialogue.
