Delhi Police end 11-hour protest over assault, Rs 25,000 ex-gratia announced for injured cops

New Delhi: The spat between police officers and lawyers at Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court on Saturday has now taken a serious turn.

The scuffle broke out when members and workers of the Indian Youth Congress were protesting outside the residence of Union Minister Giriraj Singh against Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the inclusion of dairy sector in RCEP.

Union Ministry of Home Affairs has filed an application seeking clarification on Delhi High Court order which directed for no coercive step against lawyers against whom FIR has been registered, following the clash between police & lawyers at Tis Hazari Court on 2nd November.

Delhi: Two FIRs have been registered, in connection with a violence outside Saket District Court on 4th Nov. One FIR filed on the complaint given by the police officer who was thrashed by a lawyer & another on the complaint of a taxi driver who was hit with a steel rod.

Lawyers at all Delhi District Courts on strike today, following clashes between police and the lawyers at the Tis Hazari Court on 2nd November. No protests by lawyers at any district court has been reported till now today.

On Tuesday, a large group of police personnel gathered outside the Delhi Police headquarters at ITO to protest the Saturday violence and the assault on police officers by lawyers subsequently.

IPS officers rage on Twitter

Meanwhile, several IPS officers took to Twitter to condemn the continued attack on policemen.

Karnataka IPS officer, D Roopa, said that the assault was a “mockery of the system”. She said if the “strictest action” is not taken against the perpetrators, it will dampen the morale of officers and “embolden hooligans”

IPS officer, Dependra Pathak also called for instilling the “fear of law” among “mischief-makers”.

Police officers don’t have human rights

Arunachal DIG Madhur Verma lamented that police officers don’t have human rights. “I am sorry.. we are police … we don’t exist.. we don’t have families…we don’t have human rights !!!” he said.

The IPS Association, in contrast, called for a balanced view of the Tis Hazari violence. It did condemn the attacks of officers of the law.

Columns of smoke rose into the sky and chaos prevailed on the ground as lawyers and cops fought a pitched battle that was triggered by a parking dispute inside Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court Complex on Saturday. The afternoon violence left at least 20 police personnel and eight advocates injured, officials said. A police vehicle was set on fire and eight jail vans were vandalised.

According to reports, gunshots were also heard during the scuffle. One lawyer injured and admitted to hospital. A vehicle has been set ablaze at the premises.
