Doubts over Rahul’s popularity as Congress ropes in Hardik, Jignesh, Kanhaiya for MP polls

New Delhi: He tried but it ain’t enough, at least this time, again. Well, this seems to be the sort of ambience in the Congress camp around its President Rahul Gandhi in Madhya Pradesh as campaigning for the central state with 230 assembly seat enters its last leg.

While Congress has its own narrative on reducing Rahul’s rallies with odd 2 weeks before the elections, the fact that Hardik Patel, Jignesh Mevani and Kanhaiya Kumar will campaign against the BJP during this period is a tell-tale story.

In contrast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold over 11 rallies during the same time.

So the big question that’s on everyone’s mind – is Congress uncertain of Rahul Gandhi’s performance and popularity, again?

According to an Economic Times report, quoting a party strategist in Madhya Pradesh, “Congress campaign used to peak a week or ten days before the polling date and then slow down. This time, we are going slow and save our energy for the last mile.”

Madhya Pradesh will go to polls on November 28, with November 26 being the last date for campaigning. Results will be declared on December 11.

The three musketeers

The three firebrand youth leaders are known for their strong anti-BJP sentiments. They have been vocal and brazen in their conduct, displaying political acumen and a crowd-moving charisma.

Referred to as the ‘terrible trio’ in BJP circles, they have been repeatedly refused permission to hold rallies in Rajasthan.

Let’s take a look at them briefly

Hardik Patel has been very vocal about his opposition to BJP for not granting quota to Patidars. He has also shown multiple times that he holds a soft corner for the grand old party. Not one to mince his words, his riveting speeches are very sharp and witty with a touch of aggression.

Kanhaiya Kumar rose to fame as the president of JNU students union. A master orator, he fervently jeers and chides Modi and BJP. Though aligned to leftist ideology, anything anti-BJP and collateral is his domain.

Jignesh Mevani, the Vadgam MLA from Gujarat, is a strong critic of BJP. He won the 2017 elections with support from Congress and AAP. On October 25 last month, he hurled abuses at Modi at a rally in Patna.

As far as making a dent to BJP’s vote bank is concerned, the trio could appeal to fringe voters but turning tide isn’t expected.

On the other hand, Modi is known to swing the polls in favour of BJP during the last leg of the campaign.

So, will this trick of Congress really work out? Only the results can tell.
