Global DDoS attacks increased by 84% in Q1 2019

According to new research, the number of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks has been increased by 84% in Q1 2019 than Q4 2018 and 200% in Q1 2019 than Q1 2018.

In the first quarter of 2019, we saw a huge growth in the number of Ddos Attacks, the volume of DDoS attacks and techniques which were used by cybercriminals.

The largest volume of DDoS attack was 587 Gbps and the longest duration of a single DDoS attack was a day and a half in Q1 2019.

According to research, it is found that that public-sectors, IT, finance, and professional services sectors were the most targeted sector of DDoS attacks than other sectors.

Distribution of DDoS Attacks by Country

According to the findings, China reported the highest number of DDoS attacks i.e. 67.89% while the U.S. reported the second largest number of DDoS attacks i.e. 17.17% and Hong Kong reported 4.81% of DDoS attacks in the first Quarter of 2019.

Distribution of DDoS Attacks by Type

In the first quarter of 2019, the share of SYN flood Ddos Attacks Increased to 84% from 58.2% compared to Q4 2018. The share of TCP flood attacks decreased to 3.1% from 8.4% in the first quarter of 2019 than the last quarter of 2018. The share of UDP flood DDoS attacks also decreased to 3.1% from 8.4% in Q1 2019 than Q4 2018.

Distribution of Windows/Linux Botnet Attacks

The share of Linux based botnet attacks has been decreased to 95% from 97% in the first quarter of 2019 than the last quarter of 2018.

Distribution of Threat Vectors per Attack

It is noticed that attackers are using more than one threat vector to implement a DDoS attack. 44% of attacks have been implemented by using at least 3 threat vectors, 26% of attacks have been implemented by at least 2 threat vectors and even 4 threat vectors are also used to implement DDoS attacks by attackers.

DDoS Protection & Mitigation Market Size

The DDoS attack market size is changing as DDoS attack continue to rise and their complexity is showing no signs of slowing down. In 2018, the global DDoS Protection and Mitigation market size was 1100 million US$ and it is expected to reach 3930 million US$ by the end of 2025.

To avoid DDoS attacks organizations should find IT cybersecurity solutions that can mitigate such attacks. As attackers are evolving and finding new techniques to implement sophisticated DDoS attacks, Organizations must prepare themselves for DDoS attacks, web application layer attacks and other cyber attacks.
