New charger for electric vehicles developed by BMW and Porsche offers 62 miles with only 3 minutes of charging
Adding 65 miles in 3 minutes 3 years ago to an electric Vehicle was an elusive dream. I remember when I tried an electric vehicle for the first time in 2015 it was the Kia Soul EV that according to Kia loaded 80% of the battery in 30 with fast chargers, which at that time there were not several in Dallas, with the aggravating circumstance that they were of a private company and had to become a member of it, which was not free. In addition, the complete battery of that vehicle meant only 93 miles of autonomy (150 kilometers) or 80% were only 75 miles (120 km) of autonomy.
Now who promises to charge 80% of the battery capacity of their vehicles in 15 minutes are Porsche and BMW through a system that at the moment is a prototype, which is capable of charging the battery to 450 kW, something for Now it is something impossible with any current car. This system offers 62 miles of autonomy with only 3 minutes of charge!
This charging system is being developed between the two companies, with the help of the companies Allego, Phoenix Contact E-Mobility and Siemens.
For now it is a prototype and to prove it, due to how demanding it is to load an average of 450 kW, Porsche had to equip the loader prototype with a liquid cooled cable and also prepare some vehicles and modify the cooling system of its batteries for tests.
The charging prototype station to test the system is in Bavaria and current customers can use it, although the current systems of their vehicles will limit the load to only what they can support and to have an idea, the current BMW i3 only It is capable of supporting 50 kW.
