Microsoft buys inXile and Obsidian game developer studios

During X2018, an event organized by Microsoft for all Xbox fans around the planet, several were the announcements of the Redmond company and among them one that increases its portfolio of video games.

Microsoft announced the purchase of Obsidian Entertainment and inXile Entertainment, two video game development studios that share a distinguished reputation among game fans.

Both companies will be part of Microsoft Studios and as other teams that are part of this division that is responsible for the games offered by Microsoft, Obsidian and InXile will have all the support and freedom to carry out all their creative ideas, both in the new projects, as well as in the video games already created by both companies.

inXile and Obsidian will continue to operate autonomously, but will also bring their talents and experience to Microsoft Studios.

According to Matt Booty of Microsoft Studios, the 13 teams, including these two games development studios, are focused and will continue to focus on implementing new Microsoft technologies, as well as offering content for other new platforms and services such as Xbox Game. Obsidian Entertainment was founded in 2003 in Irvine, California, by veterans of the Black Isle Studios industry, led by Feargus Urquhart. The studio quickly made a name for itself with the exclusive Xbox Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Over the last fifteen years, they have delivered role-playing games that define the genre to players both on the console and on the PC through titles that include Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth and Pillars of Eternity.

inXile Entertainment is a team of industry veterans with decades of PC and RPG experience. Directed by Interplay founder Brian Fargo, the two inXile development teams in Newport Beach, California and New Orleans excel in creating vast worlds for players to explore with titles like Wasteland 2, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Bard’s Tale IV and the next Wasteland 3.
