The headlight system of the Volkswagen Touareg is like no other

The Volkswagen carmaker with new and third generation of its luxury mid-size SUV, Volkswagen Touareg, introduced several important novelties such as the great ones screens of the Innovision Cockpit, a 4-wheel steering system and a new system of headlights that were developed together with another German company HELLA, which Volkswagen calls «headlights iQ.Light – LED Matrix».

These headlights in the new Touareg are available as an option and include an interactive control of the lights, which facilitates the use and improves security at night.

Each headlamp has 128 Led Lights arranged in a matrix of light points (LEDs) that are activated individually. The matrix consists of a Printed Circuit Board of the low beam with 48 LED lights, a printed circuit board of the high beam with 27 LED lights, both arranged as if it were a chessboard.

To these 75 LEDs of the Road and junction lights are added several LEDs for various functions such as peripheral lighting and signal functions such as animated turn signals, position light and daylight.

In total the Volkswagen Touareg, on the front between the different segments that make up the right and left, uses the power of 256 LED lights, which allows the driver not to miss a detail of the road at night.

The system uses a processor that, thanks to different systems and components such as the front camera, navigation system, GPS, degree of rotation and speed in real time, can activate the optimal lights needed in a fraction of a second for different situations.

Volkswagen explains the following,

With the “dynamic high beam assistant”, the driver switches on the main beam. From the rest (switching between high and low beam lights and vice versa, city light, optional highway light or off-road lighting) Touareg itself. Given that, based on the camera, the new LED matrix lights always work with maximum light output, they make people, objects, other vehicles and animals visible that would only be recognizable later and with less clarity with conventional headlight systems .

In other words, these new interactive headlights work as if the vehicle were a self-contained vehicle.

Here’s how the iQ.Light headlights work in detail:

  • City light: Especially wide luminous cone with focus on the sides, active up to 50 km / h
  • High beam: Low beam with wide distribution of light towards the edge of the road
  • Dipped beam: Permanent road light without dazzling other road users
  • Short highway light: narrower cone light, focused at a long range at higher speeds
  • Long highway light: narrower cone light, focused at a long range at higher speeds as there is no possibility of dazzling other road users
  • Overtaking light: Spot road light in overtaking processes without dazzling. The system detects that the Touareg leaves the lane; then it illuminates this lateral area with greater intensity
  • Long light: Road light activated manually, conscious use of the 75 LEDs of the headlights for maximum illumination. The cone light is wider than in the long light for highway
  • Light for bad weather: Reduce glare and third parties own with wet road in case of rain. It is activated as soon as the rain sensor detects precipitation. The annoying reflection of the light from the headlights on the wet and reflective surfaces of the roadway is reduced directly in front of the vehicle, since the «IQ.Light» system reduces the illumination in the area in question.
  • Anti-glare lighting for traffic signals: Spotlight reduction of the road light in its incidence on traffic signals to prevent the reflected light of the headlights from dazzling the driver
  • Off-road light: especially intense passing beam, focused on the width, to facilitate the detection of obstacles on the ground
  • Signaling light (with «Nightvision»): Flash focused on people detected with «Nightvision» without dazzling them, in order to allow the driver to distinguish them with greater clarity
