Mozilla and Yahoo, a new war for the change from Firefox to Google

Mozilla and Yahoo have embarked on a fierce battle after the suspension of the search agreement produced in the release of  Firefox Quantum.

You will remember that at the end of 2014 and after a 10-year partnership with Google,  Mozilla opted for a strategy change  to  avoid its dependence  on the Internet giant. The alliance had been fundamental and the dependence clear, because the money paid by Google covered 90 percent of the Foundation’s budget. In this way, Firefox started using Yahoo! in the United States or Europe, and other regional suppliers such as Yandex in Russia and Baidu in China.

Three years later, the current situation of Yahoo! nothing has to do with what was one of the great Internet. Speaking of course, Mozilla could not continue with a company in moribund state and without a clear strategy in the hands of its new owner, Verizon. It was expected a new change that ended up materializing with the announcement of Mozilla in the release of  Firefox Quantum of the new alliance of Mozilla and Google.

The cancellation of the Mozilla and Yahoo! It has been produced unilaterally by the first, although ” exercising our contractual right,” Mozilla explains , implying that there was a clause in the contract that allowed it ” on the basis of a series of factors, including doing what is better for our brand, our effort to provide quality web search and a wider content experience for our users. ”

Yahoo Holdings does not see it that way and has filed a lawsuit against Mozilla wielding “serious breaches and bad faith behavior of Mozilla and injuries to its business and its reputation . ” Mozilla has responded with a counterclaim, demanding payment (which seems to have not occurred) and explaining that it sought guarantees (for the indicated factors) to maintain the agreement with the new owners of Yahoo! and he did not find them.

In summary: the judicial battle will be long. Could Mozilla do anything else in the situation of Yahoo !? It does not seem, sincerely the return to Google Search was the most reasonable, although the return to the dependence of a rival in web browsing is clear.

Remember that we are talking about commercial agreements to include search engines by default. The user can change them for others of their choice as we saw in the last guide to change the search engine in Chrome, Firefox or Edge .
