A new category for Version 4 of the Periodic Table of DevOps Tools is Planning/Issue Tracking. Planning tools consist of your agile planning and project management tools that you use before any code is even imagined. These tools are used by product and project management teams and allow for creating your stories, epics, and tasks that will then drive development and the Continuous Integration process. Grouped with Planning is Issue Tracking. Issue Tracking tools include ITSM ticketing systems that will track tickets throughout the entire software delivery process. Planning and Issue Tracking tools help organization stay organized and track activities from creation to product. Up until recently, many believed that DevOps began with Continuous Integration, but value stream management requires needing to know what happens in every phase of delivery, including the planning phase. Configuration Automation
This Configuration Automation category of the Periodic Table of DevOps Tools includes tools that provide organizations with the ability to configure repeatable steps for their applications so that they don’t have to be built from scratch every time. Deploy infrastructure, deploy application, apply config to it, voila! Configuration management is a systems engineering process for establishing and maintaining consistency of an application and its infrastructure throughout its life.
