Proficiency in language is Key Selection Factor for Canada Immigration

Canada is the popular destination for immigrants. The maple leaf nation follows point based system to assess and rank them and provides them score based on their

  • Work Experience
  • Skills
  • Education
  • Language Ability
  • And Other factors

Proficiency in Language is one of the major requirements.  We find, almost every category of economic immigration to Canada, requires the result of the language test from authorized test providers.

IELTS, CELPIP or TEF

For English language, there are Two Authorized Test Providers

  • CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program)
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

For French Language, Authorized Test Provider

  • Applicants need to appear for TEF (Test d’evaluation de francais).

There is no preferred test for IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada). Hence results from all of the above three tests are valued equally, thus applicants can choose to apply for any one of the above tests as per their convenience.

When they appear in any of the above test, they are assigned a score for each of the four language abilities; and they include listening, reading, writing and speaking.

How Much Score is required?

There exists no simple answer for this question. As applicants require different scores for different programs. Hence Canada Visa applicants must always try to put their best efforts and try to get a good score and incase if they are not able to attain the desired score, they can always rewrite the test and improve their results. Another significant point to remember is, even if the applicant is confident about their language ability in English or French, they must study and practice the tests often. This will help them attain a better score.

How to increase eligibility?

The Maple Leaf nation is bilingual nation, hence applicants can increase their eligibility by submitting test results in both official languages, Canada and English. However, applicant’s need not necessarily be bilingual to qualify to immigrate to Canada.

Canadian Language Benchmark

The visa applicants can apply for any of the three tests and the results of the test would be converted in Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) or Niveaux de Competence Linguistique Canadiens(NCLC), levels.

CLB run from 4(poor) to 10(excellent). Whenever the Canadian Immigration Program indicates a language requirement, it usually refers to CLB level.

Know how to convert your IELTS results into CLB

There are two categories of IELTS- first one General Training and second one is Academic. For Canadian immigration, you must appear for IELTS –General Training.

IELTS results offer a score for each language ability and overall band score that the averages applicant’s results in each ability. For Canadian immigration, the applicant’s overall band score does not matter.

Canada has two types of Permanent Residence Programs.

  • Federal Express Entry Immigration System
  • Immigration programs of the provinces such as QSWP and PNP

For the above Two types of Canada PR programs, the IELTS score needed varies. For Federal Express Entry System the CLB needed is 7 and similarly, for provincial Programs CLB needed is different. And for Canada Express Entry, CLB must be 7.

If the language test results from the authorized test providers are more than two years old, the applicant must re-take the test.
