How Express Entry came into existence and factors for which it allots point?

Canada receives numerous applications from the migrants who are skilled and they aspire to get permanent residence status. Hence, to manage a high number of applications, it uses Express Entry, an online system; it is an advanced immigration system.

Why this new system?

The new system came into existence in the month of January 2015, Canadian authorities have designed it so that, it can better align with the skills of the immigrants with the needs of the labor market.

First come and First serve basis was replaced with Express Entry

Earlier, the applicants under different classes such as Canadian Experience Class, Skilled Trades Class and Skilled Worker Class filed their application and those were approved or denied on First-come and first serve basis. This resulted in a huge number of backlogs and it took years to process them, thus it became very difficult to manage a high number of applications and Express Entry came into existence.

How often ITA (invitation to apply) is issued?

In Express Entry, candidates are placed in the pool, using Comprehensive Ranking System; the applicants are allotted a specific score. We find, almost for every two weeks, the federal government tends to identify the highest ranked candidates and then it sends them invitations to apply for PR under the above three programs.

Special Categories under Each PNP

We find, Special Categories under each PNP (Provincial Nominee Program) were made in order to enable each province to nominate applicants those who meet its policies as well as programs. If a candidate gets a provincial nomination, it can dramatically boost the CRS score of the applicant.

Some of PNP Express Entry Categories

  • Nova Scotia
  • New Brunswick
  • British Columbia
  • Saskatchewan
  • Manitoba
  • Ontario

A significant feature of this new system is, applicants can very well improve their existing score while in the express entry pool and they need not submit a new application.

On what basis, CRS offers scores?

Based on the information provided by the candidate’s profile, the CRS offers a score to a candidate. The above scores will enable the candidate in the pool to get rank against each other. The candidates are allotted points based on below factors.

  • Education(including new rules for education obtained in the Maple leaf nation)
  • Work Experience and skills
  • Education of the applicant’s common -law partner or applicant’s spouse and Language ability.
  • Language ability in English and/or French
  • Having a job offer supported by a positive Labor Market Impact Assessment
  • For Permanent Residence, Possession of a provincial government nomination
  • The Specific combination of language skills, work experience and education will result in a higher chance of the applicant getting employed.
