Toronto Police has issued a caution to the public regarding fraudulent activities in taxis, involving the theft of bank cards. Authorities are actively pursuing a Brampton man, Steven Chambers, allegedly connected to numerous incidents.

The Financial Crimes Unit of the Toronto Police Service has documented more than 60 instances of taxi scams dating back to June 2023.

According to investigators, these scams transpire when an unsuspecting individual walks past a taxi and is approached by someone feigning to be a passenger. The imposter informs the victim that the taxi only accepts electronic payments and proposes cash in exchange for using the victim’s debit or credit card.

The taxi driver, implicated in the scam, allegedly exploits the victim’s card and covertly substitutes it with a similar-looking card. Subsequently, the fraudsters leave the vicinity to make unauthorized withdrawals and purchases using the victim’s compromised card.

Law enforcement reveals that these fraudulent activities, reported since the previous summer, have resulted in cumulative losses exceeding $40,000.

Among the identified suspects, 25-year-old Steven Chambers of Brampton is wanted on seven charges, including fraud over $5000 and three counts of assault.

Individuals possessing relevant information are urged to cooperate with the police in their ongoing investigation.
