York Regional Police launched a comprehensive initiative aimed at curbing auto theft, unveiling the campaign titled “Operation Auto Guard” this Tuesday. The initiative focuses on identifying the vehicles most susceptible to theft and the neighborhoods with higher risks.
“Operation Auto Guard” is described by the police as a robust crime prevention effort that leverages data-driven strategies, targeted community engagement, and the distribution of crime prevention tools to empower citizens in safeguarding their vehicles against theft.
According to the campaign’s findings, York Regional Police have observed an alarming 50% surge in vehicle thefts compared to the same period last year, and when compared to 2019 figures, York Region appears to be heading towards a staggering 200% increase in such incidents.
York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween emphasized that their crime analysts meticulously collected data from across the region, with particular emphasis on the areas of Markham, Richmond Hill, and Vaughan. The police force has subsequently identified regions with a heightened risk of vehicle thefts and disseminated this information through neighborhood heat maps.
The campaign’s data also pinpointed the top five vehicle models most frequently targeted by thieves, including the Toyota Highlander, Lexus RX350, Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Ram 1500, and GMC Yukon.
In a disconcerting revelation, Chief McSween stated that almost 3,300 vehicles have been reported stolen in York Region this year alone.
The “Operation Auto Guard” campaign commenced last week at various strategic locations, including Vaughan Mills Mall, Hillcrest Mall, Promenade Mall, Canada’s Wonderland, Richmond Hill Legion, and several gyms. Police officers leading “Operation Auto Guard” will collaborate with authorities in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) to combat the persisting surge in vehicle thefts, which has become a pressing concern.
