Peel regional police said they’ve made an arrest in connection to a wild sword-swinging brawl in Brampton that was caught on video and went viral on the internet.
Harjot Singh, a 25-year-old man from Woodstock, was arrested on Monday and charged with two counts of assault with a weapon.
The violent incident happened around 1:30 a.m. on August 28 in a parking lot located at McLaughlin Road and Steeles Avenue West, near the Sheridan College Davis Campus.
“Violence in our community will not be tolerated. Members of the Peel Regional Police continue to work tirelessly to bring those responsible before the courts,” Deputy Chief Marc Andrews said in a release announcing the arrest.
Video circulated on the internet shows at least one person holding what appears to be a sword and swinging the weapon. Others batter each other with fists and kicks.
Several people sustained several non-life-threatening injuries in the brawl.
The video garnered a lot of criticism regarding rising crime in the Peel region and many claimed the attacker was an international student but that claim has proved to be false.
Last month Peel Police chief Nishan Duraiappah visited the Parvasi Media office, where we answered our questions on issues like carjacking, robberies, cybercrimes, matters related to visible minorities, new immigrants particularly international students and better Police-Public relationships.
Thank you @ParvasiMedia for the opportunity to sit down with you to talk about these important topics. We will continue to strive to be the most progressive, innovative and inclusive police service reflective of our communities. https://t.co/MdNiV34U3r
