For World Hockey chief, it will be Asia vs Europe

The battle lines have been drawn. The election of new Chief of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) will witness a direct contest between Marc Coudron of Belgium and Mohammad Tayyab Ikram of Malaysia.

The election of the new President has been fixed for November 5 at the 48th FIH general house meeting. The election has been necessitated because of the resignation of Dr Narendra Dhruv Batra of India on July 18.

Dr Batra was the first ever Asian to head the FIH.

The FIH had fixed midnight of August 26 for filing of nominations for various positions on its Executive Board, including that of the President.

Besides the President, the FIH will also elect four members of its executive board. Two of these positions will go to women representatives.

For the position of Executive Board (EB) Ordinary Members from amongst women, Maureen Craig-Rousseau, Trinidad and Tobago and Elizabeth Safoa King, Ghana (both seeking re-election)(candidate for re-election), and Marion Rodewald, Germany.

For the position of executive board members (men), Hiroya Anzai, Japan, Walter Krämer, Chile, Simon Mason, England,  David Wansbrough, Australia, Piotr Wilkonski, Poland,  John Williamson, New Zealand, and  Deon Morgan, South Africa are in the run.

Four positions as EB Members of the FIH Executive Board will be elected at the Congress, or five if current Board Member Mohammad Tayyab Ikram is elected as President. The mandates of the EB members who will be elected on  November 5 will run until the 2026 FIH Congress. If there is a fifth position as EB Member to be elected, the term of office of that member will be of two years to take over the remaining two years of Mohammad Tayyab Ikram as an EB Member.

The duration of the term of the new FIH President will be of 2 years, in order to complete the mandate of previous FIH President Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra who resigned on July 18.

In accordance with the FIH Regulations, the nominations will now be submitted to the FIH Elections Oversight Panel (EOP). The aim of the EOP is to ensure that the FIH elections are carried out in a fair and transparent manner.

The FIH Executive Board consists of the President; eight Ordinary members – four female and four male Members – one half being renewed every two years; an Athletes’ Representative; the Presidents of the Continental Federations; the FIH CEO;  and any (non-voting) member co-opted onto the Executive Board pursuant to  the FIH Statutes.
