What are the Pros and Cons of Gutenberg WordPress editor?

Gutenberg has been a major change if you consider the versions and updates in the history of WordPress editing. In the beginning, many people struggled to get used to it, but are gradually finding it comfortable. It was all done to add rich content to WordPress in a simple and enjoyable way. So have they succeeded?

The move was a refreshing change from the standard Editor as it didn’t have the modern functionalities like how Medium or Ghost provided. The whole look of the editor changed, and as people started to use it, they found the following advantages that Gutenberg provided:

  • Gutenberg brought a tighter integration between theme developers, the core, editor, and plugins.

  • It works great on mobiles. If you ever want to quickly publish or edit anything on the go, just do it on your mobile!

  • Gutenberg introduced “Blocks,” a unique way to create posts and pages that will free up your creativity to build pages without losing the functionality of the site. They also can be molded into different types and saved for use later. They are searchable too.

  • You can easily move the blocks around in a drag-and-drop way as you wish.

  • The new alignment options are made keeping in mind larger resolution screens and responsive sites with full-width templates.

  • Gutenberg gives more screen space reducing unnecessary distractions for you.

  • You will be able to change the cover text and add the Call To Action (CTA) buttons more easily.

  • You can also experiment with images in Gutenberg. Besides aligning them, you can add image galleries using your creativity.

  • Those who will do WordPress editing for the first time, Gutenberg will be easier to use.

  • Now plugin and theme developers will be able to create their own custom blocks.
  • Over-reliance on TinyMCE was never going to help WordPress, but now with Gutenberg, they are in the right direction.

  • It also has a useful information box placed in the top bar of the editor. It shows all the stats of headings, word count, paragraphs, and blocks.

  • Gutenberg is made on the lines of Medium style editor which is already liked by many as an easy way to build pages.

  • We can still use the old TinyMCE editor in Gutenberg, just click the “+” button on all the blocks and select the classic block.

Just like everything else, no creation is a hundred percent perfect in the beginning. That is why Gutenberg also comes with the following cons:

  • Currently, it doesn’t have markdown support. It may be added in the future though.

  • Those who are a pro in using the TinyMCE editor will find it difficult to transition to Gutenberg.

  • It will demonstrate backward compatibility issues with the TinyMCE editor. Developers will have a lot of work to do on it.

  • Currently, Gutenberg is not that accessible as it is required but may become so in future updates.

  • It doesn’t have responsive columns yet; but again, that may change with future updates.

  • It is not compatible with some plugins like Jetpack.

All in all, it was necessary and has turned out to be a good change for WordPress. Gutenberg has laid a base for future versions of WordPress editors with its numerous new features and ease of use. The cons of Gutenberg are removable and dwarf in front of the pros.
