[REIC 2019-08] Harmful Farming Practices Destroy Agricultural Lands – Preventive Measures You Need to Adopt

[REIC 2019-08] Harmful Farming Practices Destroy Agricultural Lands – Preventive Measures You Need to Adopt

Monday 26th August 2019

It’s no longer news, across countries all over the world, that unfavorable climate change is increasingly becoming a source of serious concern.

The natural ecosystem in most countries in being threatened by slow depletion of the Ozone layer (i.e. the protective atmospheric band that absorbs most of the Sun’s potentially harmful Ultraviolet rays, which, as shown by research, can cause “long term skin damage” – among other negative effects)

The implication of this development is that our health and well being is in danger.

But it should not be so.

Especially when one considers the fact that this planet, in its original state, when we had yet to begin developing advancements that led us to tamper with it, was literally a perfect ecosystem.

It was sufficient in every way to nourish all of the life forms on it – human and non-human.

There is a particular portion of the scripture that I find particularly relevant to the theme of this article. It goes thus:

“Corruption has spread over the seas and land, as a result of the handwork of mankind” – Quran CH 30 verse 41

It is my considered opinion that the above quote, can be taken to mean that the impact of human activity has disrupted the balance of earth’s ecosystem – chemically, biologically and physically.

Since the commencement of the industrial revolution in the 17thcentury, technological inventions and the uses to which those inventions have been put, have led to increasingly severe negative impact on the environment, and the climate at large.

For instance, green house gases (oxides of carbon and Sulphur, ozone) emissions, Genetically Modified food production, as well as the application of chemicals to boost farm production has gradually taken its toll on soils used for farming, leading to wearing out of the quality of the soil chemical composition.

This piece addresses the agricultural aspects of the damage that is being done by activities causing unfavorable climate change.

The accumulation of greenhouse substances trapped and emitted from the atmosphere, especially due to deforestation are major concerns.

The rapid population growth happening globally is gradually becoming a threat to the healthy existence of life on the planet.

Food supplies and production are diminishing, which is why more effort is being channeled into use of genetic modification technology and chemicals to mass produce food.

Now, in as much as it is a welcome development in some parts of the world, the disadvantages of these new practices, in reality outweigh their advantages.

For instance, according to published reports, they are mostly responsible for the common health related diseases that we see today.

As the world’s population continues to grow, the need for adequate food to cater for consumption of everyone increases.

Despite the advances made in agricultural technology in many advanced nations, Africa continues to lag behind in food production. And this is due to the fact that obsolete systems of production remain in vogue across most nations on the continent.

Despite opportunities to learn how to boost production, from the developed nations, African countries are still hesitant, and slow to adapt.

But there may be a positive outcome from this seeming unwillingness by many African nations to adopt latest advancements as rapidly as has been happening in developed societies.

For instance, where some of these advanced agricultural systems have been adopted, a great deal of improvement has often been recorded in production output.

However, what has also been observed is that the residual effects pose enormous threat to human life, land and the environment.

Outlined below are 2 examples of farming methods which have disadvantages that make them harmful to the environment:

  1. MONOCULTURE:

This is a crop farming system in which only one kind of crop is grown on the farmland.

According to experts, this is not a healthy system of farming, because it involves the use of the same crop over and over again, which:

  1. results in nutrients used by that crop being excessively consumed by the crop, risking possible soil depletion and imbalance, relative to other nutrient ingredients.
  2. encourages increase of plants pathogen (disease causing agents) for that crop

Mono cropping is better replaced by Crop Rotation – a system involving farming of multiple crop types, in rotation – which when done right, enhances the yield obtained for the different crops.

Mixed cropping is another method that offers superior benefits, compared to mono cropping, as it not only facilitates use of crop varieties that complement one another in nutrient usage, but also preserves the integrity of the soil.

Maize, for instance, which takes up a lot of Nitrogen, is often complimented (either in rotation or mixed format) with crawling nitrogen fixing leguminous crops such as groundnut and beans (cowpea).

  1. PESTICIDES AND FERTILIZERS:

Fertilizers supply direct doses of nutrients which boost growth and performance of crops. However chemical fertilizers contain ingredients that tend to disrupt the nutrient balance of the soil over time, rendering it unproductive if their usage is haphazard and especially when they are used for long periods.

According to research reports discussed by a foreign based professor on a recent TV program I watched, information and research findings show that virtually all of us, including farmers and industries, are engaging in activities having a detrimental effect on the environment!

It appears we’ve forgotten that natural foods we eat come from the earth – otherwise, we would not sabotage ourselves in this manner.

We must therefore, based on the above, as a matter of urgency begin to take action to protect the ecosystem i.e. the community of both living and non-living organisms.

Here in Nigeria, agriculture remains the most viable way to sustain the economy.

For those of us already engaged in agriculture, and those aspiring, it is imperative that we ensure we adopt a more friendly approach in interacting with the environment. Our focus must be to avoid engaging in any activities that further damage the environment.

If truth be told, people across the globe are still struggling to make the needed changes, but we must all join hands to salvage the environment and protect the climate from further deterioration.

Indeed, efforts can also be channeled towards effecting repairs where possible.

For instance, below is an outline of a few measures that experts believe would restore our damaged lands and environment:

1          Minimization of effluents (waste chemical discharge) to the water bodies, This MUST be treated before discharge into the environment. Effluent treatment plants should be setup to make this happen.

2          Farmers should strive to reduce and/or prevent runoff from their farms, going into and therefore polluting water bodies. This could endanger the aquatic animals, over time resulting in depletion of their numbers and even gradual extinction of some of them. This has happened in the past. The dangers remain. We must therefore act with diligence and discipline.

3          Crop and livestock rearing are the common kinds of farm businesses. But the argument has been made via intensive campaigns, for massive tree planting to be done on all farmlands, given this critical state of affairs we now find ourselves facing. By engaging actively in tree planting on their farmlands, farmers can help curb and control windstorms pulling away roofs. In addition, this tree planting method can dramatically boost control of land soil erosion.

What’s more, adopting tree planting across farmlands in this manner, would over time, make deforestation a thing of the past,

But the farmers cannot do it alone. They need help from all of us!

If we combine forces with them, our efforts will have a massive positive environmental impact e.g. planted trees increasing in number would absorb more of the CO2 (carbon dioxide), and emit O2 (oxygen), which is a primary life-sustaining gas that humans need for survival.

In other words, we would all get to live better quality lives!
