Since I began my blogging journey about 5 years ago, I’ve used various keyword research tools both free and paid. Long Tail Pro is an Adobe Air (Mac and Windows compatible) mobile and desktop online application that doesn’t need to be downloaded because the software is internet based and hosted. The good thing is if you have a solid online connection, then you can utilize the long tail suggestion tool service that Long Tail Pro provides. It works by using Google’s Keyword Tool and algorithm in order to pull daily keyword search data results, both generic and specifically targeted keywords that the user of Long Tail Pro can use to analyze and target.
It has the potential to bang out well over 10,000 (Starter), 25,000 (Pro) or 60,000 (Agency) seeded (term they use in the program as far as search criteria) keywords than you can use to build up your list of targeted keywords along with the median (average) Google Adwords CPC (Cost Per Click marketing results), average monthly search volume, your website competition or competitor and last but not least the Long Tail Pro Keyword Competition metric (gives you the competitions score and analysis) a pretty neat feature. A feature that all bloggers, businesses, and services use in order to compete in the major search engines for their specifically targeted keywords in order to gain an edge on their completion, I’m guilty of it too, ha-ha.

I love the feature that Long Tail Pro utilizes in their system because it takes the keywords competition metric which is simply defined as the difficulty level of a particular keyword in order to rank or achieve higher search engine rankings for your specified term or terms. It gives you the competitive edge that you need in order to reach or potentially reach the first page of all the major search engines whether it be Bing (Yahoo), MSN but especially the global giant or as I like to call it “Big Brother,” Google. Its everyone’s dream to reach the first page of all the major search engines but it doesn’t last very long if you’re not producing content regularly, you get lazy writing, or your simply burnt out (out of ideas), all these factors can quickly cost you to drop out of the rankings within a day if you don’t keep at it, don’t forget what I’ve said, you’ve been warned! Sorry I’m not trying to scare you, ha-ha, its happened to me in the past, I was ranked on the first page and I thought that I would be forever once I made it but boy was I wrong, I dropped from the 1st page to the 3rd within 3 days. Google loves content and they want a lot of it, but it should be both decent and worthy to rank well.

First you input your keyword or plug it into the Long Tail Pro software which will then return a bunch of competitive keywords from a scale anywhere from 0 to 100, (0 being an easy keyword to rank well for your website, whereas 100 would be almost impossible but not unlikely to achieve first page rankings). My personal experiences when researching keywords with Long Tail Pro the competitive range seems to be around 8 to 65 but I haven’t seen it higher than that at any point since I’ve begun my blogging expedition, but results can vary over time. I’ve provided below an example of Long Tail Pro’s competitive analysis chart, as an example.
So, What’s A Decent Competitive Keyword Score?
If you consider trying out Long Tail Pro now or anytime soon, then I strongly recommend you research keywords that have a competitive keyword metric of let’s say, 40 for newer websites and 55 for more established websites, that is if you’d like to achieve a higher ranking within the SERPS or simply your Search Engine Ranking Position. Once you start a new website and you realize this, you won’t be able to compete with the other higher authority established websites for keywords with a competitive metric higher than 60 or more because Google at first doesn’t trust it’s worth, but with time you’ll have a better chance at attacking the higher traffic keywords. Patience is a virtue and that’s what you’ll learn with Google and you certainly don’t want to do anything to black hat (do bad things to cheat the search engines) your website, otherwise you’ll get penalized heavily. Long Tail Pro’s Rank Checker and How It Works?
Long Tail Pro is not the original or first keyword researching tool that has implemented this into their software and for sure will not be the last. I like how Long Tail Pro provides this feature into their software, it’s really helpful and interesting to know where your website measures up, like it’s a popularity contest back in high school, ha-ha, the gold ole times.
It’s a really simple process even a 7-year-old can do it, just type in your domain name (website name or your url) and keyword into the appropriate field, you can also check how popular your website ranks in a particular country or all of them, a neat feature. Type the country you want to know your website rank for, then just click the check rank button. Once you’ve done that, then the software will return the ranking position for your targeted keyword and website amongst all 3 popular search engines, Bing (Yahoo), MSN and Google. It’s an awesome feature to have within the software and it continues to be a popular feature for all of those that use the keyword tool. I’ve provided below an example of the page ranker in progress.
Long Tail Pro’s Keyword Research
As I mentioned earlier in this article, you need a list of keywords that you can then use to market your website, business, or services by first entering a seed or seeds of words into the keyword section then click on the generate keyword button. Wait for Long Tail Pro to do its job by populating a list of potential keywords you can use, it’s a very simple process. There’s several neat features within the software that you can utilize such as the average amount of CPC (Cost Per Click), keyword daily searches amount, filtering the number of words in the query and/or import a list or lists of seeded keywords from an outside (external source). I’ve provided below an example of the keyword research tool in progress.
After you’ve clicked on the generate button, the Long Tail keyword suggestion tool generally takes on average between 1 ½ to 2 minutes to populate a big list of quality keywords, this mostly depends and applies to seeded keywords and the results its database returns. Once you’ve received the keyword list, the data’s displayed in a nice, clear and in an extremely easy to understand manner.
Another cool feature of Long Tail Pro other than the keyword data layout is to make a favorite list of keywords within the software and deleting the keywords that may have no relevance to your niche, article or website. Since the goal of keyword research in the first place is to pick the highest targeted keywords with the lowest number of competing websites, you don’t want low quality keywords in your marketing campaigns unless you’re still starting out.

The keyword software gathers all of the above data in an easy and effective manner that makes understanding it a simple table-like structured format sort of like a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet.
We’ve discussed what Long Tail Pro is, what it’s used for, who it’s founded by, how it can be used and the 3 main features within the software such as the keyword research, rank checker and the edge that the competitor’s analysis feature provides. The Cons Of Long Tail Pro
I would say that Long Tail Pro has a couple of cons such as only being able to use the Long Tail keyword tool free for 7 days. I don’t think that you’ll be able to use it as a free SEO keyword ranking tool and be able to get enough impact out of it for just the trial period. Like I mentioned before, your entitled to only the first 7 days, then after that your charged based on the 3 options which would be the Annual Starter Plan $25, Annual Pro Plan $45 and the special accommodation package of the Annual Agency Plan $98. If you pay annually and in advance, then on anyone of these packages you’re getting the service for a big savings of just $3, ha-ha, I know it’s not much, what can I say I’m not the creator of the product! I have another great keyword tool in the name of Jaaxy, another great asset, its Long Tail Pro’s evil step-brother and fierce competitor. Jaaxy has a lot of great features and aids in the process of obtaining Search Engine Optimization by using its own proprietary results that Long Tail Pro doesn’t match. Both keyword tools are great but I lean more towards Jaaxy’s feature and price tag as its cheaper, effective and my preferred keyword researching tool. I’d rate the Long Tail Pro keyword research tool a decent 7/10
My Final Conclusion
I explained the positives and the cons of Long Tail Pro and why it’s a decent tool for anyone that’s looking to market their online business, blog, niche website or eCommerce business. The pros, it provides 3 main software features such as the keyword tool, rank checker and the competitor’s metric competitiveness, it allows you a test trial for a 7-day period. The cons, your only allowed to have a test trial for 7 days and the price of Long Tail Pro’s packages are quite high such as the Annual Starter plan at $25 dollars a month, Annual Pro Plan at $45 a month and then finally the special accommodation package of $98 a month. If you pay in advance you’re only saving a grand total of $3 which is quite laughable and that applies to all 3 packages. I’ve also provided you with my personal recommendation as far as the keyword research tool in Jaaxy and why I love its feature as opposed to Long Tail Pro, it’s cheaper, effective and its helped me achieve higher rankings for my highly targeted and specified keywords. Now I still continue to use Long Tail Pro but for me I like Jaaxy just a little more as it’s still my personal favorite when it comes to keyword researching tools.
