WEST PALM BEACH – When the third annual Downtown Showdown charity fishing tournament and seafood festival kicks off on May 20th, Florida Fine Cars will be there running the car show awards.
The free event – expected to attract at least 10,000 to 15,000 visitors – aims to raise $40,000 in charitable donations to benefit veterans, the Boy Scouts and to support sexual abuse prevention education for adults and children. The Downtown Showdown will spread across an area between Banyan and Fern Streets.
“It’s a fun event and the charitable organizations are fantastic,” said Florida Fine Cars Marketing Director Jamie Suid. “Helping with the Car Show awards just made sense. It’s a great day for families to enjoy some fresh seafood, check out the cool cars and take in the fishing competition. Plus proceeds go to some great causes.”
Anglers will compete for nearly $30,000 in prize money in a variety of categories including big fish overall, kingfish, dolphin, wahoo, small boat, lady and junior.
The event is organized by Southern Fishing Charities (SFC), which organizes and hosts outreach programs to support veterans. SFC partners with local organizations to create awareness and raise funds through fishing tournaments and related events.
“It’s really a huge event,” said Grant Portier, co-founder of the SFC and co-organizer of Downtown Showdown. “We’ve just got some great things throughout the day.”
The event is the city’s only waterfront seafood festival featuring the area’s best seafood providers, a special section just for kids, a car show, a huge array of local vendors and an impressive lineup of local bands, including country artist Tom Jackson.
Florida Fine Cars to Oversee Car Show Awards
The classic and custom car show awards will be at 4:30 p.m. at the Florida Fine Cars’ booth at the corner of North Clematis Street and Flagler Drive. Florida Fine Cars is a family-owned used car dealership in business since 1993 with stores in West Palm Beach, Hollywood and Miami.
“They were seeking an automotive sponsor and asked us to participate. It’s a great cause so we signed on right away,” Suid said. Florida Fine Cars will also have a display of some of its coolest cars for festival-goers to check out.
Car owners will compete for Best in Show, Best Engine, Best Paint and more. The first place winner will receive $500, second place, $300, and third place, $200.
Portier said the show is composed of about 75 carefully selected vehicles which will include classics, custom and stock.
Festival to Benefit Kids, Boy Scouts, Veterans
Local anglers created the event three years ago in memory of Scott Terry, a pro fisherman and community activist from Vero Beach who was killed in a car accident in February 2014. Terry’s friends have said it was his dream to one day organize a fishing tournament so they did it in his memory and donate proceeds to causes that were dear to Terry’s heart.
Money raised at the event will go to Lauren’s Kids, a non-profit which helps educated adults and children about sexual abuse prevention; the Boy Scouts of America and U.S. veterans.
