Celebrating US Teacher Appreciation Week — Anytime

Did you know that there’s a US Teacher appreciation week? Yes, it happens every year in May. However, the fact is that teachers do so much for the nation’s children, and they’re fantastic. And that’s why we believe any time could be teacher appreciation week. Moreover, you could use it within your school to do something to show love and even raise funds.

Anytime is the right time for your PTA, PTO, booster club, or school to express thanks for everything teachers do. So, if you decide to do your own version of US teacher appreciation week in your school, this article is going to provide you with some fun and creative ideas to add to the mix. In the end, we’ll give you a big tip for fundraising. Let’s get right to it.

1.     Teacher appreciation letters—with a twist.

One of the easiest and most powerful things your school community can do is simply to express gratitude. But let’s have a little fun with it. In an era of ChatGPT and its impact on Student learning, why not create the letters using AI? All you have to do is ask students to use the platform to write a letter of appreciation to their teachers but in the voice of a historical figure or an author. Imagine a note in the style of Mark Twain, Maya Angelou, or George Washington. It’s a twist that teaches students and also shows their thanks.

2.     Superhero profiles.

We all know that teachers are everyday heroes. So, why not celebrate them as heroes? In this activity, all you have to do is ask students to create superhero personas for their teachers. They could do it in any way they’d like to express themselves. So, they could create art on canvas or drawings on paper. Perhaps they could write a poem or short story about their superhero teachers. Ask students to get super creative and have fun with it. What is the superpower of their teachers? How did they become superheroes? This is an opportunity to have a lot of fun and use their imaginations. It’s one of the most creative, unique teacher gift ideas.

3.     Interview your teacher.

Another excellent approach to celebrating your teacher is to get to know them as people. In this approach, get your students to become journalists and reporters and interview the teachers. Do it on video. Then, get the digital artists in your school community to bring it all together into a video that you present at a US teacher appreciation week event. Doing an interview with all of your teachers is a great way to memorialize a school year and the superstar teachers in your school.

4.     Teacher biographies in a school newspaper.

Want to go retro? Think about creating a school newspaper. Recruit your students to interview the teachers in your school. But this time, feature the profiles in a school newspaper. By doing it, you show your students about the importance of storytelling. However, you can also educate them on unbiased reporting and fact-finding with regard to teacher biographies. You can then put it all together in a newspaper and have the students lead the effort in publishing.

5. Appreciation poetry slam

One final idea is to have a poetry slam, which could work well with high school students in particular. The challenge is to have students or teams of students compose original poetry to appreciate your schoolteachers. To win the slam, the more vivid the imagery and metaphors, the better. You could have the students and their families be the judges or even the teachers themselves. A good poetry slam is a lot of fun and can show much appreciation.

Celebrating US teacher appreciation week with a fundraiser

We know teachers are incredibly committed to their students. But it’s not unheard of to hear of teachers buying supplies for the classroom. A great thing to do is to pick a cool school fundraiser and designate a small percentage for teacher recognition leading up to your designated teacher appreciation week. By doing so, you create a win/win. You raise critical funds for your classrooms and combine teacher recognition with the fundraiser.
