Collaborative Nonprofit Partners & Social Change

Like everything in life, the Nonprofit sector is changing. For instance, it was only a couple of years ago when most events happened in person. Now a lot of events have gone hybrid. Moreover, there’s more competition for nonprofits, don’t you think? For example, it wasn’t long ago when nonprofits were the only place to go for social change. Now, for-profit social enterprises and companies work on doing good. And that’s an opportunity!

You see, another thing that’s changing in the nonprofit sector is that more are looking to create win/win Collaborative Partnerships for social change. There’s tremendous power in building alliances. For nonprofits, it allows them to leverage a broader audience. And for entities like institutional funders, it’s a chance to demonstrate to their audiences that they support social good causes in their community. Moreover, it’s a chance to leverage mutual resources.

The power of collaboration for social change

Let’s face it. Nonprofits have done a good job through the decades of trying to accomplish their missions. But the fact that we continue with illness, poverty, lack of quality education or healthcare, etc., means we have to do better. One great way to do it is for nonprofits to initiate collaborative Partnerships with aligned corporations, foundations, local businesses, and even other nonprofits. A great approach is to do it for fundraising and marketing purposes.

The fact is that collaborative partnerships are a great chance to leverage strength and resources. For example, depending on the size and scope of your organization, you can partner with a company and get specialized skills, say, around marketing. Further, when you infuse your organization with new eyes and ears, you have the chance to foster innovation. New people mean new ideas rise to the surface.

Building successful collaborative partnerships

So, now that you know why collaborative partnerships make sense, you might be wondering how you can do them. It’s not as difficult as you might think. Sure, it takes a bit of thought and planning, and of course, it requires that you nurture the relationships. Still, it’s possible to have several successful partnerships with different organizations and your nonprofit. Let’s explore the key elements for doing it right.

1.     Shared partnership vision and goals

To create a solid partnership, you want to ensure alignment of vision and goals. So, when you start, look up the missions and values of other organizations, and then as you explore the partnerships in discussions, poke and prod to see that, in fact, there’s synergy.

2.     Open communication

Any good relationship is built on trust, and the way to build trust is to communicate clearly. Be open about the goals you want to achieve with any partnership, and listen to what the other organizations you interview have to say. Encourage full transparency and open communications.

3.     Defined partnership roles and responsibilities

Once you agree with a partner, it’s time to get to work. So clearly define the roles of your nonprofit and the other organization in the partnership for social good. That’ll help to minimize confusion and will help ensure that you’re each accountable to each other.

4.     Resource sharing and capacity building

One of the great things about a partnership is that it allows you to share resources. For example, a company may underwrite a marketing campaign. In turn, your nonprofit may lend its technology and human capital to the effort. Remember to leverage each other’s strengths in the process.

5.     Partnership metrics and evaluation

Finally, you want to create metrics and evaluate results for your partnerships. Remember that even if something doesn’t perform as expected, it’s an opportunity to learn, make adjustments, and keep going. Every partnership requires flexibility as it develops and evolves.

The Power of Nonprofit Partnerships

When you think about it, nonprofits can drive a lot more social change with collaborative partnerships. Moreover, it’s an opportunity to scale and magnify solutions to your nonprofit’s work. So, what are the focus areas you could do in a collaborative partnership? The short answer is that it could be anything, and you’re limited only by your imagination. With a collaboration, you could partner in so many different ways.

For example, as mentioned, you could do joint marketing and fundraising campaigns. But it doesn’t need to stop there. If you have a great partner, you could do storytelling together of your teams and supporters in the community working to accomplish the joint mission. You could create a knowledge base related to your nonprofit mission or develop best practices for working to achieve more within your mission.

In conclusion, collaborative partnerships take work but are incredibly beneficial because they multiply your abilities. You can do more about your fundraising, marketing, advocacy, and even programmatic work. If this sounds like an exciting opportunity for your nonprofit, consider the areas you’d like to see supported. Then develop a list of potential partners and see how the two organizations can align for social good.
