Stakeholder Engagement: The Art of Keeping Everyone Involved

We know nonprofits are an essential part of our society. For one, they’re the ones that make the world a better place. Also, they tackle issues that others might overlook. But, let’s face it, nonprofits can be a bit of a handful. Yea, you know it. So many people are involved (and opinions) and multiple moving parts. So, keeping everyone engaged and happy may feel like a full-time job. But don’t worry. That’s where Stakeholder Engagement comes into play.

What’s stakeholder engagement?

First things first. Let’s define what we mean by ‘stakeholder Engagement.’ Simply put, it goes beyond trends in marketing. It’s much more relational. It’s the process of involving and communicating with all the people with a stake in your nonprofit’s success. So, that includes your donors, volunteers, team, board members, the people and cause you serve, and anyone else who cares about what you do.

Stakeholder engagement is critical to the success of your nonprofit. It helps build trust, foster relationships, and ensures everyone’s working toward the same goals. But it can also be a bit of a minefield. Yup, we said it, and you know it’s true. With so many people involved, it’s easy for things to get, well, ummm….messy. So, how do you keep everyone engaged and happy without losing your mind? Here are some tips.

1.     Communicate, communicate, communicate.

For starters, communication is critical, and we don’t just mean sending out the occasional newsletter. You need to communicate regularly and clearly with all your stakeholders. But it doesn’t mean ticking a ‘done’ box. For meaningful stakeholder engagement, it means updating donors on your progress, thanking them—always, and asking for their feedback.

In other words, if you want people involved in your nonprofit, you have to keep in mind that it’s a two-way street. Donors don’t just want to give you a blank check. They want a relationship. And any relationship is a reciprocal give and take. Your stakeholders are your biggest advocates, and they can help you improve, but you need to ask them strategic questions.

2.     Get everyone involved.

Stakeholder engagement isn’t just about updating people on your progress. It’s about involving donors and supporters in the process. But how? Make collaboration a priority. Encourage your supporters to share ideas, opinions, and feedback. So, invite them to strategy meetings and brainstorming sessions. For instance, think of having nonprofit town hall meetings.

Also, you can create committees or task forces to focus on specific issues or projects. Doing so helps ensure you get the best and most diverse ideas and perspectives from the community. Getting people involved might sound daunting, but it’s essential. Your supporters have valuable insights and expertise. By involving them, you get better results and build stronger relationships.

3.     Be transparent in your nonprofit.

Do we have to say it? Alright, we’ll say it. Transparency is critical to building trust with your stakeholders. Showing you’re open and genuine about your goals, progress, and challenges is vital. So, don’t try to hide mistakes or shortcomings. Instead, use them as an opportunity to innovate. Be upfront about them and ask for help.

Often, fundraisers don’t want to speak about failures or misses for fear of losing donors. Sure, failure might feel uncomfortable, but it’s crucial. If you’re not testing ideas and piloting programs, you’re not learning and improving. Remember, your stakeholders appreciate honesty and transparency. And the more you’re open, the higher your level of stakeholder engagement.

4.     Don’t forget to have fun.

Stakeholder engagement doesn’t have to be dry and boring. In fact, it can be a lot of fun and an enjoyable and creative process. By engaging your stakeholders in fun and meaningful ways, you build stronger relationships and create a sense of excitement and purpose around your nonprofit’s mission.

Remember, your stakeholders are people too. They want to be involved in something meaningful and enjoyable. So, don’t be afraid to have a little fun. For example, host virtual events such as Q&As. Create social campaigns that are fun and meaningful, like a photo contest or social media challenge. Involve your supporters in creative projects like a mural or art installation depicting your work or a video highlighting your nonprofit stories.

5.     Celebrate your nonprofit successes.

Finally, don’t forget to celebrate your successes. Celebrating your accomplishments is important for several reasons. It recognizes the hard work and dedication of your team, volunteers, and supporters. Further, it also builds momentum and enthusiasm for your nonprofit’s mission and its future. So, it’s vital to celebrate the wins.

This doesn’t have to be a big, formal event. It can be as simple as sending out a thank-you note or sharing a success story on social media. You can also create recognition events such as ‘Donor of the Year’ or incentives for your supporters. Whatever you do, make sure you take the time to celebrate your achievements.

In sum, stakeholder engagement is a critical component of a successful nonprofit. It helps build trust and grows relationships. Remember, your supporters are your biggest champions. So, by engaging them in meaningful and creative ways, you create a common sense of purpose and excitement. Go forth and engage your stakeholders—the possibilities are endless!!
