High School is one of the most critical years in a young person’s development. Sure, it’s a time of stress and uncertainty for many teens. However, this doesn’t have to be a negative experience. Many teens find that volunteering outside of the classroom helps them build friendships and establish a sense of belonging. It’s a great opportunity for teens to give back to the local Community. So, if you’re in high school, the parent of high school kids, or teach them, here are some community service ideas for high school students.

Research to find out how you can help your community.

For starters, research which organizations and nonprofits in the community may need your help. Doing so allows you to understand better your particular skills and how to use them to help others. For instance, let’s say you’re great at social media. In that case, you may find a way to help in marketing for nonprofits.

By researching causes, you can better understand which organizations you’re interested in helping. Also, you may discover certain types of volunteering better suit your interests and abilities. For example, if you’re interested in environmental causes, you may want to volunteer with a conservation group. Also, by teaching a class, you get experience teaching in a low-risk environment. In the knowledge age, teaching as an adult is no longer necessary. 3.     Do an organized sports tournament for kids in need.

Many sports teams host fundraisers or tournaments to help raise money for kids in need. Look into the groups in your area and see if they’re holding a match or fundraiser that you can do. For instance, look at Go Fund Me campaigns. If you’re physically fit and can put your heart into a sport, you may be eligible to participate in a tournament that raises money for needy kids (e.g., a marathon). Or you could start a sports fundraiser of your own with a kid-friendly shoe drive fundraiser. 4.     Offer to tutor children in your community.

Or, if you happen to live in a city or town with a local community center or Y, you may find kids in need of tutoring help in those places.
