Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Jim Carrey Dismissed

Summary: A judge dismissed the wrongful death lawsuit against Jim Carrey on January 25.

The Wrongful Death Lawsuit filed against Jim Carrey has been dismissed, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Carrey had been sued by the family of his ex-girlfriend Cathriona White, who committed suicide in 2015. Her family accused Carrey of adding to her depression and supplying the prescription drugs that killed her.

“The case and all claims against Jim Carrey have been dismissed,” Carrey’s publicist told E! News. “He is extremely grateful to everyone in his life who supported him throughout this challenging episode.”

The attorney for the plaintiffs also said that his clients were “pleased.”

“Mr. Burton and Ms. Sweetman are pleased the case has been resolved. They appreciate the support they have received worldwide,” Michael J. Avenatti said.

White’s mother, Brigid Sweetman, and estranged husband, Mark Burton, sued Carrey in 2016, and in their lawsuit, they said that the actor had given White herpes, which made her depressed. They then said that Carrey had given White prescription drugs that he had obtained under a false name, and that he was responsible for her death.

Carrey, 53, filed a countersuit, saying that Sweetman and Burton were trying to extort him. He said that White had threatened to smear him with claims of him giving her STDs, and he said those allegations were false.

“I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved,” Carrey said after Sweetman and Burton’s lawsuit was first filed.

White and Carrey dated between 2012 and 2015 after meeting on a film. The Irish makeup artist had a history of depression, and authorities found a suicide note written for Carrey at the scene of her death.

After the announcement of White’s suicide, Carrey expressed his remorse.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona,” Carrey said. “She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled. My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her.”

Prior to the dismissal of the case, Carrey’s legal team had asked for White’s medical history. Through discovery, Carrey’s people found that a 2011 document that said White was clear of STDs prior to meeting the comedian was forged.

Carrey was represented by attorney Ray Boucher.
