Storytelling Intern by Day…

My name is Sam—or, more commonly, Samtern—and I’ve been working in 90’s Storytelling department for about eight months. Lend me your eyes and I’ll write you a blog about what goes on behind the scenes at a growing agency. Why not do so by bringing you on a journey through a typical day? Here goes:

11:00 a.m. – Since 90 was so kind to accommodate my Master’s Program enrollment, I work on a modified schedule—I’m usually getting off the elevator and waving hello to our Office Manager, Eric, while trying to fit my bike through the front door. This is a VERY bike friendly group.

A quick trip to the bike room leaves me at the office cold brew kegerator, pouring myself a cup of nitro to jumpstart my body and mind.

Once I’m settled in, I check my email and fire off a Slack or two into the teeming, topical discussions on 90’s network—ranging from #90Pets to #UnpopularOpinions—and always a laugh. I like to check Basecamp (our project management tool) and see what’s on my plate for the day, before doing some industry research on Ad Age or Fast Company.

11:30 a.m. – I head into an IR (Internal Review) with one of 90’s dedicated client teams. Client teams at 90 are a symbiotic unit. From the top down, the agency moves as one and ensures that every client, large and small, is matched with a full suite of skills and personalities on each project. In an IR, I typically sit with designers, developers, storytellers, account managers, PMs (Program Managers), and one of the creative directors—working cohesively to consistently deliver quality work.

12:30 p.m. – I use the hours between meetings to work on my running projects. My workload ranges from writing copy for campaigns, to creative concepting, to proofing and beyond. The scope of work and opportunities to challenge myself and learn the craft are what sets this internship experience apart from a work standpoint. From my first day I’ve been integrated into projects and included as a true contributor. Oh, and everyone gets their own coffee. Trope—deflated.

2:30 p.m. – I have some time set aside for a one-on-one with my supervisor, Senior Storyteller Marly Beste. Typically, Marly and I discuss current projects, new opportunities within the agency and overall time management to make sure I am utilizing my abilities and always learning. Marly has been, in essence, my mentor at 90. She never withholds a critique, but is the first to encourage, and most importantly, trust me to contribute at a high level. Having her trust—and that of 90 as a whole—has made this the most unconventional and enriching internship I’ve experienced in my career.

4:00 p.m. – As is tradition on Thursday afternoons, the whole agency gathers in our “Red Rocks” meeting area for Thirsty Thursday. Yes, there are thirsts being quenched by the vast and varietal beer fridge, but Thirsty Thursday is a fitting way for everyone to gather and unpack the week—updates, industry shareables and wins—to ring in the end of the week. Our founding partners, Jim and Sam, can be found cracking a cold one with the team.

So, how do I feel by the end of the day? Pretty darn fulfilled.

I hope I didn’t blog out of key. Reach out to us.
