The 5 Dangers of Forced Teaming and Blurred Lines in Activism Groups

Activism spaces and groups are huge fans of large sizes with many believing that bigger is better.

Unfortunately, this can lead to a bunch of people forced teamed together because apparently a lot of people in the same place at once = "unity".

Potential consequences of forced teaming include:

1. Reduced Group Cohesion:  Blurring lines may dilute the sense of shared identity and purpose among group members.

Unclear, undefined, and random boundaries can make individuals feel less connected to the group and less motivated to contribute to its goals.

This can weaken group cohesion and make it more difficult to maintain a sense of unity and purpose.  These groups tend to start strong but lose steam before they accomplish their goals.

2. Diminished Group Identity: Blurring lines can erode the distinctiveness and uniqueness of a group.

When boundaries are unclear, it becomes harder to define who is and who is not part of the group. This can lead to a loss of group identity and a sense of belonging, making it more difficult for the group to assert its power and influence.

3. Loss of Focus:  Blurring lines can lead to a lack of focus and direction within the group.

When the group's goals and objectives become less clear, it can become challenging to prioritize activities and allocate resources effectively.

4. Increased Conflict: Blurring lines can create opportunities for conflict and disagreement within the group.

When boundaries are unclear, it becomes easier for individuals from different backgrounds or perspectives to clash. This can lead to internal strife, divisions, and factions, which can weaken the group's unity and undermine its power.

5. Diluted Collective Voice: Blurring lines can make it more difficult for the group to speak with a unified voice.

When the group's boundaries are unclear, it becomes harder to determine who has the authority to represent the group and articulate its views. This can weaken the group's ability to influence decision-makers and advocate for its interests, thereby reducing its power.

Knowing who you are and what you stand for both as an individual and as a group is required to grow, advance, and make changes.

That said, Black women and Black girls, Black females must continue to overcome racism and misogyny as we assert our rights to define ourselves for ourselves.
