Donald Trump does not drink, smoke, or do drugs.  Here’s why

The Donald’s eldest sibling, Freddy, Jr., did not want to go into the family’s real estate business. Part of the reason may have been that it is widely reported that he simply could not live up to his father’s high standards and demands. Freddy, Jr., while by accounts good-natured, simply could not get along with his father and the two fought often. So, instead of taking on the natural role of the eldest son and entering the family business, he chose to become an Airline Pilot. 

Freddy, Jr. died of alcoholism in 1981, while still at the height of his career of flying, at the age of 43. His death was horrifically self-inflicted and given that Freddy, Jr.’s father, Fred Trump, lived to the age of 93, Freddy, Jr. clearly cut himself down in his prime.

Like many whose lives have been touched by the curse of alcoholism, Trump views it as an addiction that destroys not just the victim, but the families as well. He has gone on record to state,

I’ve never understood why people don’t go after the alcohol companies like they did the tobacco companies. Alcohol is a much worse problem than cigarettes.

The annoying behavior of the nondrinker from a drinking family is flagrantly on display these days in the person of Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Trump’s adored older brother Fred was one of those heart-breaking men who could not stop drinking. Fred, Trump has said, was, “the  best guy. He just had everything.” 

But Fred was an alcoholic. When he went off to college, according to his younger brother, he started to drink too much. “He would tell me, ‘Don’t ever drink. Don’t ever drink.’”

Fred Trump could not take his own advice. He died at 42. For Fred’s kid brother Donald, it was a defining moment.

Mr. Trump said he had eventually come to recognize that his brother was a talented pilot and belonged in the clouds, not amid bricks and mortar. But by the time Donald had graduated from college in 1968 and had begun ascending at Trump headquarters on Coney Island, Freddy’s drinking was out of control.

The years that followed were unkind. He got divorced, quit flying because he knew his drinking presented a danger and failed at commercial fishing in Florida. By the late 1970s, he was living back in his parents’ house in Jamaica Estates, working on one of his father’s maintenance crews.

In 1977, Donald asked Freddy to be the best man at his first wedding, to the Czech model Ivana Winklmayr, an honor Donald said he hoped would be “a good thing for him.” But the drinking continued, and four years later, Freddy was dead.

He also said that, at 69, he had grown to appreciate his brother’s free spirit.

“He would have been an amazing peacemaker if he didn’t have the problem, because everybody loved him,” he said. “He’s like the opposite of me.”
