Filipina Women-The Role of Class and Religion.

There are different types of Women in the Philippines. The rich, those that belong to the middle class and the poor or financially unstable. Actually they don’t just refer to women but also to men but let’s concentrate on the women of the Philippines.

Most rich filipino girls in the  grow up with a nanny attending to their needs while both parents or even one parent go to work. There are also those whose parents, whether one or both, earn money abroad and the children are left with either one parent or left with their relatives. Girls who belong to the middle class sometimes grow up with their relatives especially with their grandparents while both parents go to work. Girls who are unfortunate in financial aspects grow up with their family but start to work at an early age of six helping their parents earn money for food. Because of their unfortunate situation they tend to miss classes in school and would then lead them to stop going to school. Only a handful of these girls who belong to financially unstable families finish college or even enter high school. Most of them only finish elementary if they’re that fortunate enough. Rich girls and those who belong to the middle class go to private schools while those who are poor go to public schools.

How each girl behaves or act towards other people all depends on the upbringing of their parents or guardians. Rich girls and those who belong to the middle class are usually restricted in going out alone. Whenever these girls go out with friends, they are accompanied by their nanny or guardian until they are mature enough, never alone by themselves unlike those who are financially unstable who go out on their own even at a very young age. There are girls whose parents are strict and those who are lax. Sometimes, super strict parents would cause their daughters to find ways to be able to go out on their own and would eventually end up in trouble. They are like cows let out of their stall. They go wild. But not all parents are like these, so there are still Filipina girls who grow up honorable.

In terms of religion, women who belong to the Catholic faith wouldn’t mind being in a relationship with someone who belong to a different faith but that is not the case with born-again Christians or those whom people label as Protestants. Born-again Christians do not involve in relationships with people of different faith. If they do and they go beyond the limits, the Christian church they belong to will ask them to leave the church. This means they are excommunicated until they repent of what they had done. Being in a relationship and going beyond the limits especially with someone with a different faith would mean going against the will of God.

As the saying goes, “The grass is greener on the other side of the fence.” There are women who go to work abroad and there meet the man they eventually fall in love with and marry. Women who seek partners from another country while in the Philippines usually see these foreigners as an answer to their financial instability. But not all Filipino women have this kind of thinking, there are still those who end up with a foreign partner because of love and not because of money.

Filipina women are just like any other women in the world. Her colors do not define who she is but how she’s brought up, her characteristics, her heart, her individuality defines who she is.
